11-27-07, page 2
Digital Media 38, Flash Animation, 3 units
Presented as 34B and 34C. There was discussion on the numbering sequence and
whether it would be confusing to students since these courses do not have
prerequisites. The decision was made to renumber the courses.
Material from Digital Media 34A, Flash I, has been added to each of these courses,
resulting in a change from 1 ½ to 3 units. This will allow students to concentrate on
their areas of interest.
When asked whether 34A would remain in the catalog, Mark replied that it would for
the time being. If the new 37 and 38 prove to be successful it may be removed at a
later date.
Digital Media 40, Individual Projects, 1 unit
New course. Articulation Form 1 submitted and accepted. No changes suggested.
Certificate, Digital Media
New. (See Certificate of Completion, Music Technology, for discussion on the

questioned the inclusion of area C2 on Form 3. Gene agreed to remove it. Patricia
called attention to Form 4; it needs either a comparable course or a rationale.
Needed:
• Remove Area C2 on Form 3.
• Add a comparable course or a rationale to Form 4.

New course. Articulation Form 2 submitted and accepted.
Curriculum Committee
11-27-07, page 4
Kaaren noted that the prerequisite skills have been rewritten to use measurable verbs,
but the same changes have not been submitted for the prerequisite course, Interior
Design 50. That course should be updated and submitted to the committee.
Dmitriy commented that the degree of importance column on the Prerequisite
Content Review Form contains all 2s and 3s. It should contain some 1s.
Needed:
• Revise Prerequisite Content Review Form.
• Revise Interior Design 50 and bring to next meeting.
Request to remove from catalog:
• Interior Design 64, Visual Merchandising, 3 units
A.S. Degree, Interior Design
Revised degree. It was noted that Interior Design 10 appears in both the core course

from the core classes, thus reducing the core total from 36 to 33.
Needed:

• Include the Program-based General Education Proposal form in the final

national certification. It was suggested that an explanatory paragraph be added above
the certificate. (See Dental Hygiene and Nursing programs for examples.)
Needed:
• Change title and type of certificate as shown above
• Add an introductory paragraph per discussion.
Patricia Shannon thanked Barbara Daher for the huge amount of work that went into

MASS COMMUNICATIONS
Thomas Lothian presented.
Mass Communications 72, Television Sports Production, 2 units

more specificity and noted that only three good assignments are needed for each
course.
Needed:
• Advisory Content Review Form A for each course.
• Rewrite Typical Assignments per discussion above.
MUSIC
Patricia welcomed John Wilson, new faculty member in music. Also presenting, Tim
Harris.
Music 1, Introduction to Music, 3 units
One hour of laboratory has bee added to replace the Music 500 course that is no
longer available.
Music 8, History of Rock and Roll and Popular Music, 3 units
New course being proposed for American Cultures. Articulation Forms 1, 2, 3, 4,
and 5 submitted and accepted.
Patricia initiated a discussion on the American Cultures proposal. She noted that the
bibliography does not seem to represent the underrepresented groups being included
in the course, and asked that more materials be included. John Wilson asked the
difference between texts and materials. Patricia answered that he might include
articles, musical scores, recordings, and films featuring musicians from the targeted
groups. She suggested adding 3-4 pieces for each group.
Jane added that she would like to see the groups being targeted named in the course
outline. Patricia suggested that the easiest way to include this information would be
in the Catalog Description and Course Content sections.
Needed:
• Include names of the targeted groups in the Catalog Description and Course
Content sections.
• Add materials to the bibliography (see discussion above)..

Curriculum Committee
11-27-07, page 7
students’ transcripts. If it were increased to 18 units it could be submitted to the state
as a Certificate of Achievement. There was further discussion on naming
conventions, state approval, and the possibility of awarding a paper certificate that
does not appear on the transcript. John will consider revising to a Certificate of
Achievement during the next curriculum cycle.
Transfer Preparation, Music
A.A. Degree, Music
Revised to reflect course title changes. Ron noted that we may need to notify the
state as a non-substantive change.
Patricia commented that as the discipline’s offerings continue to increase and broaden, it
might be helpful to have a chart of some sort to explain the various tiers to potential
students to help inform their choices. Perhaps the information could be placed on the
discipline’s web site with an ad in the printed schedule directing interested students to the
web site.
Request to Remove from Catalog:
• Music 7, Electronic Music, 2 units
Patricia asked whether the discipline wants to remove this course from the
catalog before Music 25A and B have been approved by CSU/UC? Gene

PHOTOGRAPHY
Photography 10, Artists’ Rights and the Law, 3 units
New course. Dmitriy asked why it is being offered in Photography rather than Art.
Gene replied that it was created by a photography instructor. Offering it as an Art
class might create a problem with minimum qualifications. Jim suggested submitting
it in both Art and Photography as a cross-listed course.
Needed:
• Consider submitting as an Art course also, and cross listing.
• Add a rationale sentence to the outline justifying the textbook date.
Photography 80, Photo Silkscreen Printing, 3 units
