 Rewrite first sentence in Prerequisite Skills to read, “Before entering the

There was discussion on whether the lecture and lab portions of Course Content need to
be divided. Gene reported on a discussion at the CIO conference that leaned toward
laboratory being a method of delivery. Gayle explained that in these courses, students
are not sent to a separate laboratory. They spend 4 hours in the same room with the
teacher. It was consensus of the committee that separation of lecture and laboratory is
not necessary for this course.
Jim commented that in order to avoid having this discussion in future years, we might
add an explanation in the course outline.
MSC (Pitcher/Matthews) that ESL courses (and others as appropriate) that have
embedded laboratory hours designate this by adding “(includes lecture and
laboratory)” to the Course Content heading.
ESL 111A, Pronunciation, 2 units
Change in hours from 2 hours lecture, 1 hour laboratory to 1 hour lecture, 3 hours
laboratory. Gayle explained that the former hours did not meet the Carnegie allocation

Hours/Units changed from 1 ½ - 6 hours laboratory, ½ - 2 units to 1 ½ - 3 hours

Needed
 Provide rationale for textbook date older than 5 years.
MSC (Pitcher/Ozdemir) to accept the ESL classes with modifications noted.
WORLD LANGUAGES
Cristina Moon presented. She reported that Frederick Hodgson did the revisions on the
1A/B classes, Francisco Zermeño did 2A/B, and she did the conversational courses.
They have added 1 hour laboratory to all courses and updated textbooks. The
conversational courses have been increased from 2 to 3 units.
Wayne commented on “unit creep” and asked whether the disciplines thought through the
implications to students of the increase of units on the conversational courses. Cristina
said that this reflects how classes are actually being taught and the work students are
doing without getting credit for it. Spanish and French students will be doing an online
workbook; other language students will be sent to laboratories or will work in
conversation groups led by learning assistants.
Marcia commented that before she came to Chabot, many of the conversational courses
were removed from the catalog. The public is requesting that they be added back. Gene
reported that they were removed about four years ago due to a budget crisis.
The World Language subdivision is asking that the languages be listed alphabetically in
the catalog rather than being clustered under a Foreign Languages or World Languages
heading. MSC (Pitcher/Victoria) to list the Foreign Language disciplines in the
catalog in alphabetical order, not together in one section. (The subdivision will let us
know how they would like FORE 1L, Foreign Language Lab, to be listed.)
