Minor Changes to the School of the Arts packet were approved by consent
contingent upon changes being made as noted on master packet and returned to the

5.
Major Changes
THEATER ARTS - Dov Hassan presented
Theater Arts 20, Introduction to Design for the Theater, 3 units
New course. Being recommended for CSU and UC Transfer lists.
Theater Arts 30, Emerging Work, 3 units
Being changed from 9 hours laboratory to 3 hours lecture. Discussion revealed
that this change puts the outline and the reality of how the course is being taught
into synch.
AA Degree, Theater Arts
Theater Arts 40 is being replaced by Theater Arts 20 in the core. Theater Arts 6
is being added to the options list.
MSC (Warda/Wu) to approve Theater Arts 20, 30 and the AA Degree contingent
upon changes being made as noted on master packet and returned to the division.
ARCHITECTURE
Certificate of Achievement, Architecture Technology
Discussion on the number of units contained in the certificate. Edna Danaher
noted that this certificate needs state approval and requested that it not go into
the catalog without that approval. Adrian Huang will reformat and send to
Wayne, who will forward to the committee for electronic vote.
Needed:
•
•
Put in proper format (See catalog for example)
Divide courses into Fall and Spring semesters
ART HISTORY – Diane Zuliani presented
Art History 7, Multicultural History of American Art, 3 units
New course. Being proposed for American Cultures and Graduation requirement
Area C, CSU Transfer, CSU GE Area C1, UC Transfer and IGETC Area 3A.
MSC (Ogman/Soares) to approve Art History 7 contingent upon changes being made
as noted on master packet and returned to the division.
BIOTECHNOLOGY – Patricia Wu presented
Biotechnology 40, Biotechnology Laboratory Skills I, 4 units
New course. Being proposed for Graduation requirement Area B; CSU Transfer,
CSU GE Areas B2, B3; UC Transfer and IGETC Area 5A.
Needed:
•
•
Consider adding Mathematics 54 and 55B to the advisory.
Phrase Typical Assignments as if speaking to students.
Biotechnology 50, Biotechnology Laboratory Skills II, 4 units
New course. Being proposed for CSU and UC Transfer lists. There was
Curriculum Committee
12-1-09, page 6
discussion on whether a grade of “B” or higher was appropriate for a prerequisite
course. Consensus was that it should be changed to “C” or higher.
Needed:
•
•
•
Change prerequisite to “Biotechnology 40 (completed with a grade of
“C” or higher)”.
Consider adding Mathematics 54 and 55B to the advisory.
Phrase Typical Assignments as if speaking to students.
MSC (Soares/Ogman) to approve Biotechnology 40 and 50 contingent upon changes
being made as noted on master packet and returned to the division.
PHYSICS – Scott Hildreth presented
Physics 22B, Calculus Applications for College Physics II, 1 unit
New course. Being proposed for CSU and UC Transfer lists. Presented as
Calculus Applications for College Physics. (Kaaren noted that because we
already have a course titled Calculus Applications for College Physics (Physics
22A) we will need to add numbers to the titles to meet state curriculum reporting
standards.
Needed:
•
•
•
Submit a revised outline for Physics 22A entitled “Calculus Applications
for College Physics I”
Retitle Physics 22B “Calculus Applications for College Physics II”
Change dates on both outlines to Fall 2010.
MSC (Warda/Ogman) to approve Physics 22A and 22B contingent upon changes
being made as noted on master packet and returned to the division.
BIOLOGY
Biology 2A, Principles of Biology I, 5 units
Biology 2B, Principles of Biology II, 5 units
It was noted that because Mathematics 55 is a prerequisite to Chemistry 1A, it
does not need to be listed on the outlines.
There was discussion on a mismatch between the Expected Outcomes of the
revised 2A and the Prerequisite Skills of the revised 2B. The proposed solution
was to go back to the Expected Outcomes on the November 1998 Biology 2A
outline.
Needed:
•
•
Remove the prerequisite Mathematics 55 from both outlines.
Return to the Expected Outcomes from the November 1998 Biology 2A
outline, revising numbers 7, 10, 14, 20, and 23 to include measurable
verbs.
• Use the revised Expected Outcomes (see above) as the Prerequisite
Skills for Biology 2B.
Bring revisions to the December 8 meeting.
MSC (Ogman/Warda) to extend the meeting to 4:10.

MATHEMATICS – Cindy Stubblebine presented
Mathematics 54L, Applied Intermediate Algebra with Lab, 5.5 units
In answer to a question from Wayne, Cindy explained that the 1 ½ hours of
laboratory were left off the outline in error. They will be reinstated.
Mathematics 103, Basic Mathematics, 3 units
New course. Replaces the current Mathematics 105 (Fall 2007).
Mathematics 104, Prealgebra, 3 units
Mathematics 104W, Prealgebra Workshop, 0.25-0.5 unit
These were introduced as revisions to Mathematics 105 and 105W, but
discussion yielded the opinion that they should have a different number to avoid
confusion. Cindy will take this suggestion back to the subdivision for approval.
Mathematics 105, 105L and 105W will be removed from the catalog.
Needed:
•
Change Prerequisites for Mathematics 65, 65A, and 65L to reflect
renumbering (see above).
MSC (Soares/Ogman) to approve Mathematics 54L, 103, 104, and 104W as
amended, contingent upon changes being made as noted on master packet and returned
to the division.
Mathematics 122N, Math Laboratory Non-Credit
New course. Kaaren raised the question or whether this is legal, referring to the
removal of 500 courses due to changes in Title 5. Wayne will research and
report back to the committee.
MUSIC RECORDING AND TECHNOLOGY - Tabled to December 8.
6.
Good of the Order
Jane reported that she sent a list of courses being submitted for CSU GE and IGETC to
the deans and administrative assistants. She needs the final outlines by December 8.
Christine reported that World Languages would like to bring their outlines to the
December 8 meeting. They will be adding a notation that these languages are taught via
immersion.
7.
Next Meeting: December 8, 2009
