Minutes of October 27, 2009 MSC (Cirera-Perez/Ogman) to approve the minutes of October 27, 2009, as presented. 3. Nursing and Dental Hygiene Presentation Wayne Pitcher distributed his list of comments to the packet. DELETIONS Dental Hygiene 74L, Dental Radiography Open Lab, .5 unit Course is no longer being offered. MSC (Soares/Bhangal) to approve deletion of the above course. MINOR CHANGES (Consent or FYI changes) DENTAL HYGIENE JoAnn Galliano presented. These courses are being retitled and renumbered in accordance with accrediting body regulations that state that courses designated as a “lab” have a student teacher ration of 1:15, which does not apply to these supplemental courses. . Dental Hygiene 60S, Dental Anatomy and Morphology Independent Study, 1 unit; changed from Dental Anatomy and Morphology Lab, 1 unit Dental Hygiene 61S, Head and Neck Anatomy Independent Study, 1 unit; changed from Head and Neck Anatomy Lab, 1 unit Dental Hygiene 71S, Pre-Clinical Dental Hygiene Independent Study, 1 unit; changed from Pre-Clinical Dental Hygiene Lab, 1 unit The following note was added to the 1992 text: “Standard textbook – content has not changed. New edition is not available.” NURSING – Nancy Cowan presented. Nursing 58, Nursing Care for Patients with Infectious Disease, 1 unit Needed: • SLO forms Nursing 61, Clinical Nutrition, 1.5 units The date of the text was changed to 2009 at the meeting. Curriculum Committee 11-3-09, page 2 Nursing 64, Pharmacology for Professional Nurses, 2.5 units; changed from Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, 2.5 units Needed: • SLO forms Nursing 69, Gerontological Nursing, 1 unit Minor Changes were approved by consent contingent upon changes being made as noted on master packet and returned to the division. MAJOR CHANGES NURSING Kim Cristobal introduced the following courses. These courses are restricted to Nursing students and are taught by Nursing instructors. Having them in the Biology discipline confuses students. Some have argued that because it is not a Nursing course it is not required for graduation. Nancy Cowan added that we are one of only three community colleges in the state who teach pathophysiology as part of our program. Most programs teach it after transfer to a four-year school. Discussion revealed that while Nursing 68L is a corequisite to Nursing 68, Nursing 68 is not necessarily a corequisite to Nursing 68L. Nursing 68, Pathophysiology, 3 units Changed from Physiology 2, Pathophysiology, 3 units Needed: • SLO forms (Kim Cristobal will submit to Carole Splendore) Nursing 68L, Physical Assessment, .5 – 1 unit Changed from Physiology 2L, Physical Assessment, .5 - 1 unit Wayne commented that the prerequisites seem to have changed from Physiology 2L to Nursing 68L. Dale responded that it is a result of moving the course from the third semester of the Nursing program to the second semester. At the meeting, the catalog description was changed to read, “…and concurrent enrollment in the second semester of the nursing program…” Needed: • SLO forms (Kim Cristobal will submit to Carole Splendore) • Content review forms for the revised prerequisites • Check pages 150-151 of the catalog to be sure revisions are not required. MSC (Shannon, Ogman) to accept major changes in the Nursing discipline as amended contingent upon changes being made as noted on master packet and returned to the division. Jane asked why she had done a Trans/Bacc form on Nursing 55, but it did not appear in the packet. Nancy will check with faculty. 4. Good of the Order Patricia Shannon asked Kaaren Krueg to work out a system with the new Title III administrative assistant, Debra Lovendusky, for sending electronic copies of SLO worksheet included in the final packets to Carole Splendore. Curriculum Committee 11-3-09, page 3 It was noted that Computer Application Systems 102, approved at the October 27 meeting as a minor change was actually a major change due to a unit/hour revision. MSC (Shannon/Ogman) to accept the revision of Computer Application Systems 102, from 1-3 units/3-9 hour to 1 unit/3 hours. Wayne sent out an email asking for help in finding a remembered policy for dealing with separating lecture and laboratory content in the arts. Jane reported that in OSCAR there is a box that needs to be filled in if a course contains laboratory. On occasion they have stated, “laboratory content contained in lecture,” but she does not feel it makes a strong statement. Patricia remembers a discussion when Ron Taylor was VP in which he stated that if we were audited we would be in good shape if we could prove that we have actual laboratory content. Consensus was that we need to ask the School of the Arts faculty to separate their course content into Course Content (Lecture) and Course Content (Laboratory). Wayne will let them know of our decision and that we are inviting them to come back with their revisions on December 1. There was discussion on Spring presentations. Wayne will send an email reminding faculty of the December cut off for CSU GE Breadth submissions. Jane initiated a discussion on committee procedures when a motion initiated by one division/discipline has been approved, and faculty in another division/discipline do not agree with the decision. The second group feels that there was insufficient consultation before the vote was taken. Because the course in question is an experimental course, faculty have another opportunity to consult if/when the course comes back for a catalog number. Architecture 2A, Architectural Drawing and Graphics I, 3 units This course was approved at the October 20 meeting with an advisory of Art 2A. The discipline would like to change this to a prerequisite. Adrian Huang submitted a revised rationale, course outline, and prerequisite content review form via email. MSC (Ogman/Soares) to accept the change. Wayne reported that the CurricUNET steering committee came back from last week’s conference impressed by the Program Review Module, which could help us address some of the accreditation team’s comments. Patricia added that now is the time to design how our curriculum approval system will work. If you have suggestions for changing or streamlining the process, please let the steering committee know. 5. Next Meeting: November 10, 2009 6. The meeting was adjourned at 3:40 p.m. kk 11/4/09
