1. Call To Order
The meeting was called to order at 2:10 p.m.
2. Minutes of November 29, 2011
There was some discussion about the wording on the minutes regarding Patricia
Shannon’s presentation on the SLOs. It was suggested that the second sentence that
begins with “She remembers a heated conversation…” be removed completely. The third
sentence in this area should then have the “However, as” deleted and leaves the
beginning of the sentence to read “We are now…”
In regards to Repeatability: Begona suggested that where Ken Grace discusses the
changes to the 175 hour rule in Title 5, it should read: “The changes (175 hours to 350
hours) would allow students….”
Jane and Gary Carter had some discussion about prioritizing the classes that are
repeatable to be handled in a logical manner.
Catherine Pinkas stated that the change in repeatability of classes begins in Fall 2013.
Each course outline that can be repeated will need a different content and outcome for
each repeat.
Linnea asked how this will work with lab classes. Jane said she is not sure at this point.
MSC (Buti/Chaudhuri) to approve the minutes of November 29, 2011 with changes as
noted above.
3. Art Studio
Clayton Thiel introduced his three new courses that he developed as part of a Transfer
Model in Studio Art. He claims its very stream lined and will only take 2 years to get
through. TMC needs to be submitted for approval.
Art 23, 2-D Foundations
New course. Request for CSU and UC transfer. Replaces Art 10, which will be
removed from the catalog.
Art 24, 3-D Foundations
New course. Request for CSU and UC transfer. Replaces Art 11 which will be
removed from the catalog.
Textbooks required dates.
Art 25, Exploring Art and Visual Literacy
New course. Originally presented as an experimental class, Art 49. Due to the
change, all the forms need to be revised to reflect correct information. It is
essentially critical thinking through visual images.
2001 textbooks needs to be justified.
It was suggested to add: Strongly recommended: eligibility for English 1A.
MSC (Pinkas/Victoria) to accept these art classes with revisions as noted.
4. Music Industry and Certificate Program
AS – Music Industry & Technology
Eric Shultz presented his proposal for a new AS degree in Music Industry & Technology
and Certificate in Music Industry & Technology.
Eric stated that the AS Degree in Music Industry & Technology will be the only
Associate's degree of its kind in the East Bay, and only the second such program in the
entire Bay area.
MSC (Victoria/Cirera-Perez) to accept this proposal and presented.
5. Mass Communications
MCOM 1
MCOM 3
MCOM 41
Larry Leach presented the above three existing courses. He wants MCOM 1 and
MCOM 3 to transfer to CSU and UC. He wants MCOM 41 to be approved for IGETC on
December 15, 2011. He believes by adding his changes these courses qualify as critical
thinking courses.
It was suggested that in MCOM 1 the course content needs to be expanded to be more in
line with the expected outcomes.
MSC (Buti/Plondke) to accept these proposals with suggested changes.
6. Anthropology
AA- Anthropology
Mireille Giovanola presented her proposal for an AA degree in Anthropology. She wants
to offer this AA degree as a more holistic approach to the study of humans. It would be a
more rigorous approach than the AA-T degree they have proposed.
ANTH 29 (Independent Study)
This independent study class, arranged by a faculty member, does not have a course
outline. The committee recommended that this course should remain in the degree..
MSC (Buti/Cirera-Perez) approved as presented.
