CHABOT COLLEGE Curriculum Committee Minutes March 22, 2011 Members Present: Jane Church, Debbie Buti, Begona Cirera-Perez, Patricia Shannon, Ernesto Victoria,Catherine Pinkas, Indrani Chaudhury Ex-Officio Members Present: Edna Danaher Guests: Kurt Shadbolt 1. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 2:12 p.m. by committee chair Jane Church. 2. Minutes of March 8, 2011 MSC (Cirera-Perez) to approve the minutes of March 8 as presented. 3. ATEC 9903 and ATEC80 Kurt Shadbolt introduced the following courses: ATEC 9903 – California Emissions Testing Technician Training ATEC 80 – California Emissions Testing Technician Training ATEC 9903 is being introduced an experimental course for Fall 2011 and Spring 2012. ATEC 80 will begin in Fall 2012. These courses will provide the training necessary to apply for a California Smog Technician. At one time these modules were separate classes. By combining these modules into one class allows the students, in a timely manner, to become eligible for the state testing. Kurt also explained that because of the state criteria, a student could pass the class for a Chabot grade, but not be eligible for taking the State Licensing examination. An example is that the state has a strict attendance rule. A student may pass the class on a whole for Chabot College, but if attendance does not meet the state standards, will not pass the class in the eyes of the state. Kurt explained that a student will be allowed to make up the specific days they missed in the next semester. Smog License Certificates are only good for 2 years. ATEC 80 will become part of the Automotive Engine Performance Technology degree. It will replace ATEC 68. Initially, Kurt had added that this class “may be repeated three times.” Due to the new, strict laws on repeatability, he agreed to remove this statement. MSC (Cirera-Perez/Victoria) to approve the proposal with the change in repeatability. 4. Minor (Consent/FYI) Changes HIS 27 – Being submitted IGETC, Area 4D Gender Studies. 5. CurricUNET and Administrative Assistants – Buti and Church met with the admins on Friday, 3/18/11 to explain CurricUNET. Buti explained that all the admins are extremely anxious about this new process. The following are the questions they would like answered: If the CurricUNET does not allow more than 10 proposals in the queue, what message will be given to the faculty if they are number 11 in line? If there are only 10 proposals looked at each meeting, what happens if a faculty member has more than 10 items for either revision or new proposals? Would they have to present more than once at Curriculum? Can one rationale page be submitted for a series of courses? If a new program is being presented, and it has more than 10 courses how will this be presented? It was suggested that a blog be created with a FAQ as they arise and are resolved. 6. Repeatability Discussion Continued Shannon was very concerned about the letter from Beth Smith. PLEASE FILL IN THE BLANK – I did too much listening 7. The Role of the Curriculum Division Reps in Relation to Curriculum Proposals and CurricUNET Cirera-Perez is concerned that if administrative assistants are not the point person for faculty who will be available to them? She feels that this may be too overwhelming for curriculum reps. This sparked discussion about training discipline leads. There was considerable discussion on this topic. Cirera-Perez is concerned about who will be responsible for training faculty in the fall. She believes that the admins need to be a point person in each division as they are now. Shannon explained that training on CurricUNET will be shown to Curriculum members and discipline leads, etc. Shannon suggested that Jane contact Carole Splendore and a FA representative to meet with Dr. Railey as there may be contractual issues in regard to “discipline leads.” Since many disciplines are taught by adjunct, the question came up about who is responsible for creating course outlines and training on CurricUNET. It was suggested that full time faculty take this opportunity and responsibility to save sections or disciplines that are critical in their division, even if taught by adjunct. Jane volunteered to talk to the divisions and deans about the upcoming changes. It is recommended that the deans work together to split up the calendar year and create their own deadlines so there is not conflict. Then the divisions can meet and determine their lead people in specific disciplines and create their own scheduling deadlines. 8. Good of the Order MSC (Victoria/Buti) It was approved that the next two Curriculum meetings will take place on April 5 and April 26, 2011. 9. The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m. dab 3/23/10
