CHABOT COLLEGE February 8, 2011 Members Present: Debbie Buti, Jane Church, Begoña Cirera-Perez, Barbara Ogman, , Patricia Shannon, Ernesto Victoria, Christine Warda Ex-Officio Members Present: Edna Danaher, Kaaren Krueg, George Railey Guests: Tim Dave, Dov Hassan, Kathy Kelley, Jon Palacio 1. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 2:05 p.m. by the chair, Jane Church. Jane announced that Patricia Wu will no longer be representing the Science/Math division. A replacement has not been found. 2. Minutes of December 7, 2010 MSC (Buti/Ogman) to approve the minutes of December 7, 2010, as presented. It was noted that on December 7 a motion was passed “that at the first committee meeting in spring we write job descriptions for the chair and the members of the committee.” As this did not happen, it was requested that this task be placed on the next agenda. 3. Clean-up Proposals SOTA THEATER ARTS Dov Hassan presented. He stated that this course gives students valuable skills that will be needed as they audition for jobs or to move on to a 4-year school. He has added the course to the AA Degree as an option. Theater 8, Audition Technique, 3 units There was discussion on whether the content justified the number of units. It was suggested that the typical assignments could be fleshed out to help explain the range of content being covered. Ernesto noted that the assignment regarding a head shot would be expensive and suggested adding that to the Catalog Description. The repeatability statement was questioned. How would the course content vary if taken multiple times? Is it justified as a student’s acquiring mastery through repetition, as in studio courses? George Railey commented that the Legislative Analyst’s Office is paying close attention to courses that do not fit into the goals of Transfer, General Education, and CTE. He feels that offering this course as repeatable would raise a “red flag” at the state. Christine asked that appropriate Communication Studies courses be added to the degree. Curriculum Committee 2-8-11, Page 2 Needed: • Remove repeatability. • Add “Students will be expected to have a head shot taken at their own expense” to the Catalog Description. • Include a final examination or project in the Methods of Evaluating Student Progress. • Expand on typical assignments. • Add Communication Studies courses to the degree as appropriate. MSC (Shannon/Ogman) to approve the Theater Arts presentation contingent upon changes being made as recommended above and the submission of a completed Library Consultation form by the end of the week. MUSIC Jon Palacio presented. Music [MUSA] 11A, Jazz Improvisation I, 1 unit Music [MUSA] 11B, Jazz Improvisation II, 1 unit Units reduced from 2 to 1; hours from 7 to 4 based on course content and its practical application. Music [MUSP] 14A, Jazz Lab I, 1 unit Music [MUSP] 14B, Jazz Lab II, 1 unit Updated for currency. The Music courses were approved by consent. SOCIAL SCIENCES EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT Barbara Ogman presented. She stated that the changes made were substituting Early Childhood Development 56 for Early Childhood Development 51 in the advisory statements and updating textbooks. Early Childhood Development 40, Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning, 3 units Early Childhood Development 59, Literacy in Early Childhood, 3 units The Early Childhood Development courses were approved by consent. SCIENCE/MATH PHYSICS/MATHEMATICS Tim Dave presented these two courses. The only change proposed was to make the courses cross-listed. Physics 18/Mathematics 18, Preparatory Physics, 3 units Curriculum Committee 2-8-11, Page 3 Discussion: • • These courses need to become part of a program, either as an elective or required course. If the Physics faculty submits a Degree proposal, Physics/Mathematics 18 could be included as an elective. The course outlines have a prerequisite skills section; however, the catalog description stipulates no prerequisite course. Since there is no prerequisite class listed, this section should say “None.” However, Tim Dave stated that students who do not have the necessary skills will not succeed. The question is how to establish the need for these classes without the extensive research required. Patricia Shannon stated that there are two other paths for approving a prereq: 1) if a 4-year institution requires an equivalent course as part of a series or as prerequisite to entering a program; 2) the class is part of a series within the existing courses. Tim asked if there was any alternative? Could we modify the course outline to stipulate “recommended skills”? Given the position of the faculty on the need for the skills, a number of short-term solutions were considered. MSC (Shannon/Ogman) that we modify these course outlines, and these outlines only, to read “Highly recommended skills for students” and that programmatic and prerequisite issues be resolved during the next curriculum cycle (by December 2011). MSC (Shannon/Cirera-Perez) to accept the cross listed courses. 4. Curriculum Committee Website Jane showed the committee the updated web site and the resources that have been linked to the page. 5. Calendar for the upcoming 2011 Curriculum Year (Jan-Dec.) After discussion, it was agreed to meet every other week until the queue dictates otherwise. Proposals will be calendared on a first come, first served basis by course or by discipline. It was suggested that we inform faculty that we will not review their proposals until they are complete. 6. CurricUNET Update Jon Palacio reported that everything we asked for is now online. The courses are up but they are not filled in. CurricUNET did a Banner dump that includes courses that are no longer in our catalog. He, LaVaughn Hart and Jeannine Methe will meet next week. Passwords may be provided in April. George recognized Jon for being aggressive on making things happen. 7. Next Meeting: February 15 from 2:00-3:00 in Room 1506. 8. The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m. kk 2/10/11 c:\documents\word\curric\2010-2011\2-8-11.min.doc
