1.
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 2:10 p.m. by committee chair Wayne Pitcher.
2.
Minutes of May 18, 2010
After discussion, it was decided to delete reference to “counseling” in item #4. An error
in numbering was also noted.
MSC (Buti/Ogman) to approve the minutes of May 18 as modified.
3.
Introductions
Wayne noted that introductions were not necessary because those present knew each
other. He did report that Jas Bhangal has resigned from the committee. He will
encourage Tom Clark to find a replacement for her.
4.
Fall Schedule
Wayne stated that we will try to get packets to the committee in a timely manner this
year, and that if we stay on schedule we should have only one meeting after
Thanksgiving.
There was discussion on how to include information on courses approved last spring for
Fall 2011 in this year’s packets. Perhaps on the Dean’s checklist.
Wayne reminded members that Jane Church needs to know of all changes, no matter how
minor, so that she can update records as needed.
5.
Training (general and stand alone)
Wayne commented on the lack of training last year, which made things difficult for new
members. He would like to take part of the September 14 meeting to do a run-through of
some “practice” proposals.
On September 7 we will participate in the state’s Stand-Alone Course training during the
regular meeting time. Members can participate from their offices. Because of changes
to regulations, everyone must participate this year. Deans should also participate.
Wayne will send details for logging in. One of the training sessions will be archived for
those who cannot attend the live session. Wayne must affirm that everyone has
participated and return the signed sheet to the System Office by September 30.
6.
CurricUNET
Wayne reported that Jon Palacio is taking over as CurricUNET chair. He, Jon, and
George Railey had a phone conversation with Jared, our new CurricUNET rep, earlier

this month. Also, the CurricUNET Committee met last week. Members are working on
troubleshooting the CurricUNET demo page so that corrections can be made. Next
meeting of the CurricUNET Committee will be September 9 at 2:30. Location TBA.
Kaaren is working on uploading new courses to the State’s CurricUNET database. Once
submitted there is about a 3-month turn-around time. Jane has been added to the user list
so that she can submit the new area of emphasis in the Liberal Arts degree. Jane noted
that it would be helpful if program approvals were read into the Curriculum Committee
minutes.
There was discussion on how to educate faculty on the steps of gaining approval for new
programs. As many new programs are proposed by new faculty members, they need to be
aware of the approval process and the types of information that will be required to
submit for approval.
7.
Good of the Order
Jane reported that the GE Fliers are available online from either the Career and Transfer
Center or the Counseling Division home pages. They are listed as General Education
Transfer Requirements on the navigation bar.
Jane initiated a discussion of when newly approved courses should be offered for the
first time. She used Art History 7 as an example. The course was approved during last
year’s curriculum cycle, and has been listed as meeting our American Cultures
requirement. However, UC has not approved it for transfer, the reason being that the
textbooks listed on the course outline do not cover all of the cultures listed in the catalog
description. Unfortunately, UC looks only at the outline, and did not have access to the
bibliography the instructor produced for our American Cultures approval. The instructor
is revising the outline. We will process it at our September 21 meeting so that it can be
resubmitted to UC in October. The problem now is that the course is being offered this
semester, and students who take it now will not be able to transfer it to UC because
approval is not retroactive. The course must sit on the transfer list at the time the student
takes the course.
There was lengthy discussion on how to educate faculty and students to this situation and
the possible pitfalls of offering/taking courses before they are articulated. Suggestions
were made about where transfer information is or should be located, including warnings
that a course does not transfer at the present time: syllabus, ASSIST, memos to faculty
proposing new courses, CurricUNET notifications, etc. Wayne noted that moving to the
year-long curriculum cycle might alleviate some of the problems.
Jane related a situation in which a student took a 49 that later became an actual course.
Because 49s don’t transfer to UC, he was 3 units short on entrance requirements and
transfer was denied. She thinks we need to take a closer look at experimentals.
8.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
