Faculty Member Third Year Review Date The tenured faculty members in the Department of X reviewed Faculty Member’s third-year materials. This report was drafted based on their responses. It is intended to provide comments and suggestions that will be useful as Faculty Member continues working toward the goal of becoming tenured at Texas Tech University (TTU). Faculty Member is an [Rank] in the [Department]. S/he has a traditional academic appointment that includes teaching, research, and service. Teaching Faculty Member has generally received marginally acceptable teaching evaluations from his/her students but has had a progression of improvement in teaching scores. S/he received a mixed teaching evaluations from a peer review, with several helpful suggestions for improvement (a third evaluation is forthcoming). Faculty Member is working very hard to improve teaching, attending several teaching workshops and seeking input from other faculty. S/he serves as a thesis and dissertation committee member, collaborates with other faculty, and presently serves as the dissertation chair for [number] students. [further elaboration as appropriate] Suggestions: Maintain efforts to improve teaching. Consider working with TLPDC to improve in the classroom. Continue to serve on thesis and dissertation committees and seek to serve as committee chair when appropriate. Research Faculty Member’s scholarly productivity is unfortunately at a level below what would typically be expected for a new faculty member at the stage of a third year review. Without a significant increase in productivity, we do not believe it likely that s/he will meet the standards for the awarding of tenure and promotion in the future. Of greatest concern is his/her publication record. S/he has published one article and was as fourth author. This lack of productivity in publications is extremely problematic. S/he was the recipient of $XXX of intramural start-up funding and a $5,000 seed grant for two years. No publications have yet emerged related to either. On a more favorable note, [elaborate on successes such as conference proceedings and grant proposals.] Suggestions: Invest considerably more effort in the pursuit of publications. In addition to collaborative efforts, submit first and sole authored works for publication review in outlets consistent with his/her scholarly interests Discontinue effort to secure extramural funding pending further success in publication. A record of publication within respected peer-reviewed journals is an essential foundation for review in extramural proposals. Without a record of publication within the topical area, reviewers will conclude a lack of expertise relevant to the proposed project. The excessive time and energy demands required for the generation of extramural proposals will detract substantially from time to invest in completing the publications necessary for success with tenure and promotion. Limit other areas of responsibility that might interfere with effort to submit an elevated number of manuscripts for publication review. Narrow research interests to one or two core areas from which to develop a workable program of research. Move conference papers along to journal publication. Service Faculty Member is a member of two professional organizations and serves on one department committee. S/he has reviewed three journal articles and six conference submissions for three organizations. S/he has significantly collaborated with faculty on development initiatives and administrative projects. Suggestions: Seek opportunities for University level committee service. Continue to be actively involved with professional organizations. Summary Based on our review of his/her credentials and accomplishments, we recommend the continuation of Faculty Member with the expectation that substantial improvement is necessary. [Based on our review of his/her credentials and accomplishments, we recommend further faculty input regarding continuation in his/her faculty role. Signature Dr. A, Committee Chairperson
