Cognitive and Neuroscience Investigations of Information Search and Stopping Rules
Information Requirements Determination
Managerial Decision Making
Cognitive and Behavioral Issues in Systems Development
Research Domains
My research has generally focused on information search and stopping behavior in understanding
information use and in developing technology. Much of my research has been devoted to
information requirements determination for systems development and online information search,
stopping, and filtering. My research method has typically been experimentation, although I have
also used protocol analysis, simulation, and surveys. In the information requirements
determination area, I have (1) applied new theoretical lenses to improve the conceptualization of
the process and its implementation, (2) extensively explored elicitation of information from users
of systems, (3) helped increase our understanding of cognitive problems that occur during
elicitation, (4) proposed new prompting tools to overcome elicitation limitations, and (5)
investigated the use of stopping rules by analysts when eliciting requirements. I have also
investigated the sequential adoption of novel technologies in recent work, using an
organizational learning perspective to study how similarly situated companies decide whether to
adopt new, novel technologies. In the area of online user search behavior, I have been concerned
with stopping rules that serve as filtering mechanisms for decision making. My current research
focuses primarily on investigating searching and stopping behavior using various neuroscience
techniques.
