All Board Policies are currently being reviewed and will be re-arranged to match a State numbering system and with the Board Policies and Administrative Procedures. No more than 40 units can be gotten by Credit by Exam (CBE) policy. The policy will still allow faculty to determine which courses can be part of the CBE. Laurie: What about lab courses: answer: faculty choose whether to institute CBE for any course. Students can not demand that a course be in the CBE. Rachel: Is there a demand: Jane: Still not many students use CBE. Kathy: This issue came up from LPC’s fire marshal program. Also, the CBE concept potentially would be in line with the State goal of pressuring colleges to speed up course completions. Question: What about veterans who got course in the military non accredited or accredited course. What about experiential education? Luis Flores Chabot-Las Positas Faculty Association Shari Jacobsen Kathy: On the board policy we need language about how both our college and other college courses students can not take as a CBE Also, the issue of what shows up on a transcript needs to be discussed. We need a policy the considers the one time nature of ?challenging a course through CBE. Also that we exclude students who took the course too. To do this, the eligibility language needs to Chabot Academic Faculty/Senate Draft Minutes of February 26, 2009 be developed correctly. If a student took but did not pass the course, they can not take the course (accredited) if not accredited then they could. Rachel: What latitude do faculty have to design the exam: Answer you can do whatever you feel is necessary. Laurie: does the CBE give grades? Answer: yes. The test design is very important. 4.0 Faculty training for legal changes from SSTF: TMC’s, Repeatability; Kathy: We need to create a Taskforce to look into the repeatablity issue and unfunded mandate issues. 5.0 DISCUSSION ITEMS 5.1 Dealing with “Academic Changes” 5.2 Planning for Education Master Plan Kathy: We need to work out how the college is going to fund the work to do a new Educational Master plan. 5.3 5.4 Transfer Model Curriculum requirements Staff Development - role/functioning: Jason: Language Arts is concerned that we are spending our Staff Development flex Days on non staff development tasks such as SLOs and program review. We want the college to return to doing actual staff development on flex days. It seems like the staff development committee has been taken over by the PRBC to get its work done but that no staff development still exists anymore. Andrew: The problem is that we also need to do the work of SLOs and program review, etc. together and it is better to do that work together and on flex days than on off hours. Jim: We could change the name to “workdays” as the K-12s do but we do need to do this work and I support Andrew that doing it on flex days work. Perhaps we could get the staff development committee to assign as least one flex day to actual staff development in the future. 5.5 6.0 Changes to Senate Charter - Membership REPORTS II 6.1 Senate President’s Report 6.2 Division Representatives Next Meeting: February 28, 2013 2
