Intercollegiate Athletic Advisory Council (IAAC) Meeting September 13, 2010 3:15 PM Athletics Office Conference Room UNI Dome Present: Bob Decker, Joel Haack, Mark Jacobson, Lisa Jepsen, Lisa Krausman, Jess Nissen, Felly Phommalinh, Dick Smith, Eugene Wallingford, Kay Weller, Pat Whitt, Jean Berger, Troy Dannen, Sue Joseph, Daren Koudele Recorder: Sheri Bishop 1. Approval of Minutes — from April 28, 2010 a. none 2. Introduction to the IAAC a. Membership: CHFA will elect its new representative soon. Jacqui Kalin and Jamar Thompson will represent SAAC this semester. b. Charge: The IAAC provides academic oversight of the Department of Athletics and serves as an academic liaison to faculty and students. Major tasks of members include conducting team meetings and assisting in the exit interview process. 3. Discuss Council Business for Coming Year a. This year, the council will work with the NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) to formalize and streamline the duties of the IAAC, the FAR, and the Compliance Council. The council will also reconsider its make-up and structure. The council will begin this discussion at its next meeting. b. All agreed that the relationship between the faculty and the Department of Athletics is better but can be improved by more explicit communication between the IAAC (and its members) and the faculty. 4. Reports a. NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative (Jean Berger for Anne Woodrick) i. At its summer retreat, the Compliance Council recommended that head coaches of UNI teams should not teach Coaching Theory classes. The council discussed the pros and cons of each alternative, including the potential conflict of interest when assessing student work and the appearance of academic integrity issues. Bob Decker moved: "No UNI varsity coach should be assigned as the lead instructor in a Coaching Theory course.". Kay Weller seconded the motion. After further discussion, the council passed the motion unanimously. ii. Anne is compiling the results from a Satisfaction Survey given to all student athletes. Components include academics, residential life, etc. b. Department of Athletics — Compliance Officer i. The council welcomed Darin Koudele, the new Director of Athletic Compliance. This was Darin's first day on the job, so he had no report other than to say he is excited to get started. — Associate AD i. NCAA Certification update: We have completed our video conference. The Gender Equity review will be done next month. Our Institutional selfstudy is due to NCAA on April 29, 2011. — Athletic Director i. New Athletic Staff: We now have a Compliance Director with 2 full-time staff and 1 GA with compliance experience. Steve Schofield was promoted to Associate Athletic Director/Internal Operations. Matt Lyons is the Director of Panther Scholarship Club. John Eby is Director of Athletics Marketing & Promotions. Eric Hrubes is Assistant Director of Athletics Marketing & Promotions. We are in the process of hiring a Facilities Manager. ii. Board of Regents Report: Troy shared thoughts on the President's report to the Board on general fund support of athletics. The full report will be on the UNI website soon. The council will review the report with the AD further at next meeting. 5. Old Business a. none 6. New Business a. none 7.
