The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are outreach and student services programs designed
to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds and assist
them in preparing for, working toward, and completing a post-secondary degree. All
programs and services are funded solely through the U.S. Department of Education and at
no cost to students and families.
TRiO Upward Bound at Bloomsburg University targets Columbia,
Northumberland and Schuylkill counties located in the coal region of
Northeastern Pennsylvania within the central Appalachian Mountains.
Currently, the project serves eligible participants in 9th through 12th grades
at Berwick, Mahanoy, Milton, Mount Carmel, North Schuylkill, Pottsville,
Shamokin, and Shikellamy School Districts.
The Summer Academy is just one component of Upward Bound. It
consists of a 6-week residential academic program emulating the college
experience. Coupled with services delivered during the academic year,
together these components provide participants a continuous experience
that includes: 1) academic instruction, 2) tutoring and study skills, 3)
rigorous curriculum selection, 4) standardized assessment preparation, 5)
college and career exploration, 6) financial literacy, 7) persistence, 8)
cultural enrichment and social growth. In addition, the summer bridge
program consists of a 6-week residential program for eligible graduates to
complete two college level courses and earn 6-credits toward their degree
completion at their host institution.
