The Social‐Ecological Reworking of Modern Environment‐Food Systems amid Global Changes

Lab, Earth and Environmental Systems Institute, Pennsylvania State University; Research Fellow, Harvard University This talk examines the reworking of modern environment‐food systems through the changing dynamics of 2.0‐2.2 billion smallholders worldwide. A series of new and original findings on the resilience and vulnerability of smallholder environment‐food systems in the context of global processes and patterns of urbanization, migration, and climate change will be presented. Social‐
ecological interactions and biodiversity are linked at local and regional levels to issues of resource management, socioeconomic change, information networks, diet and human health, and energy systems. The research integrates conceptual and statistical modelling with extensive field studies and research projects worldwide. Changing smallholder environment‐food systems are interdependent on new geographic spaces, scales, spatial interactions, and territorial designs.
