Teaching Awards or honors 2009 Nominated for President’s Excellence in Diversity and Equity Award 2007 Recognized by Texas Tech Mortar Board as a “Most Influential Professor” 2007 Appointed McNair Scholar Mentor Research and/or Creative Activity 1. Area of research interest and research in progress My research both verbally and visually uses autobiographical storytelling as a means to share the transformative ability of art. My writings and presentations are based on social theory/ justice issues with an emphasis on outreach. Topics of interest include marginalized or disfranchised groups within educational settings, the pedagogy of outreach and feminism in art education. Two examples from my writing are “Telling Stories: Feminist Lessons Through Art”, Art Education for Social Justice, 2009 and “Low-Rider Bikes in Higher Education: A Project for Throw Away Youth”, The International Journal of the Arts and Society, 2007. Presentations examples include: Consciousness Raising as Pedagogy: Secrets and Safety Within the Classroom”, National Art Education Association, 2008 and “Silence Within the Chaos”, Texas Art Education Association, 2006. My research is a tapestry of pedagogical philosophies, learning experiences and life time lessons. 7 In my art practice I use beads and sequins, linocut, and embroidery in banners, wall pieces and artists books. Romantic in nature these personal myths tell the story of my sojourn. Like pages from a diary old photographs become memories, dreams wander into daylight and landscapes become meditations. Examples of this work can be seen in “Decisions of the Heart: The Stories and Art of Future Akins”, a film I produced with director Doug Nelson for KTXT, the Texas Tech public broadcasting service outlet. Works in progress include two articles: “Just Close Your Eyes; the Impact of a Blind Student in a Clay Studio Course” with Professor Von Venhuizen and “Art on the Move”, recounting how being raised a “military brat” influences my art. In my artistic practice I am developing a series of works inspired by traditional quilt making techniques using beads/sequins, linocuts and embroidery. 2. Community Service 2004-present The impetus for my proposing, and receiving approval for, a School of Art/Lubbock Independent School District outreach project came from listening to PhD candidate Kyle McQuilken’s presentation on “Lowrider Bike Culture of West Texas” and attending Professor Will Canning’s sculptor student’s kinetic art bike parade. Both events occurred in April, 2004. Since that time, I have been the SOA “Low-rider/Dream bike” project coordinator. As such, I am the lead liaison with the Lubbock Independent School District and the principals and teachers involved. I am also the lead in justifying and requesting resources. In 2008 I approached STEM, Office of the Provost, Texas Tech University for financial support. The support requested was granted. During 2008, both the SOA and STEM were nominated for and awarded the Texas Association of Partnerships in Education top award (the Crystal Award) in regards to the success of the Low-rider project at Atkins Middle School, Lubbock, Texas. Fifty bikes were built and displayed by students at a parade held at TTU. These bikes became the property of largely youth-at-risk attending Atkins. During the fourth quarter 2008, I developed and presented a budget, which was approved, requesting CVPA funding of a 2009 Project. 2007 Arranged tours, lunch and presentation which I gave for in-service training for Lubbock ISD art teachers. 2006 Regional Juror for VASE (Visual Arts Scholastic Event) Odessa, Texas. 18 19
