Our November 8th Event Recap
On Thursday, November 8th, ISPE’s PNW Chapter hosted
a tour of CMC Biologics’ manufacturing facilities in Bothell,
WA. In addition to the attendees from the local community,
the group was pleased to welcome 18 members from the
ISPE Japan Affiliate. Following a brief networking period
and welcoming remarks from CMC’s VP of Technical
Operations, Bob Munday, and Shimizu Corporation’s
General Manager, Shigeru Nakamura, the group was
provided with an overview presentation of CMC’s
background and capabilities. Smaller groups were then
guided through CMC’s two contract biopharmaceutical
manufacturing facilities, providing unique viewing of their
new facility built to accommodate disposable technologies,
as well as their newly remodeled large-scale commercial
manufacturing facility. The event proved to be very
educational and well received.

After the tour of CMC Biologics the 18 members from the
ISPE Japan Affiliate traveled back to the Seattle waterfront
for an evening social event at the Fisherman’s Restaurant
on Pier 57. Everyone gathered at a banquet room on the
second floor with a beautiful view of the ferries crossing
Elliott Bay and the new Seattle Ferris Wheel on the end of
the pier. Our guests from Japan had a chance to relax and
network with local chapter members while enjoying a
selection of drinks and appetizers provided by our
sponsors. It was a fun evening connecting with our
colleagues across the Pacific.
Special thanks to CMC Biologics, SABArchitects & Harris
Group, Inc for sponsoring this successful event.

The ISPE Annual Meeting Through the Eyes of
a Newbie
On November 10th I flew down to San Francisco to attend
the ISPE 2012 Annual Meeting. It was my first time at an
Annual Meeting and I didn’t know quite what to expect. As
an architect who specializes in biotech lab and
manufacturing planning and design, I know a little bit
about a lot of things in the biopharmaceutical industry, but
I am certainly no scientist. I suspected I might be a bit
overwhelmed by the technical complexity of the classes
and the many displays in the Exhibit Hall.
I hit the ground running on Sunday morning after visiting
the friendly people at the registration center and I was off
to my first class titled, “Disposable Technology: Challenges
and Solutions”. The speakers covered topics such as
“Secure Supply Chain Management for Single-Use
Component”, “Technology Advances and Integration for
Implementing Single-Use BioProcessing” and “Single-Use
Mixing Solutions for Large-Scale Media and Buffer
Preparations and Downstream”. It was a great class and I
was relieved that I was able to follow and understand the
discussions of higher titers, problems of extractables and
leachables, virus inactivation strategies and the pluses and
minuses of mag-lev mixers. After surviving my first day of
classes I was rewarded by a fabulous evening party hosted
by Commissioning Agents, Inc. (CAI) at the Asian Art
Museum. There was a great group of people to network
with and a treasure hunt contest to encourage us to
explore the galleries that were open exclusively for us.
through the Exhibit Hall whenever I had some free time
and had great discussions with many of the vendors. The
DPR party at AT&T Park was another evening highlight.
Despite a full schedule of classes and events I was still able
to carve out some time to explore San Francisco,
wandering through Chinatown and taking the trolley down
to the waterfront.
My first trip to the extremely well-organized and
hospitable ISPE Annual Meeting exceeded my expectations
and was definitely worth the time and expense. I would
encourage all ISPE members to go and give it a try at least
once.

by an
an awards luncheon. Our own
relatively small PNW chapter managed to win a First Place
Award for Innovations in Communications through the
North American South American Affiliate Council (NASAAC)
Standards of Excellence Program. The presentations were
inspiring and interesting and illustrated how committed
the members of ISPE are, both nationally and
internationally, to supporting and improving the industry.
While perusing the ISPE Knowledge Center and Bookstore I
picked up some Good Practice Guides on laboratory and
biopharmaceutical manufacturing facilities at discounted
prices.
The rest of the week was a blur of classes during the days
and social events in the evenings. I learned about “Future
Trends in Biotechnology”, participated in a workshop on
how to “Build a Biotech Facility”, took a tour of a modular
clean manufacturing “Pod”, and learned about the benefits
and challenges of “Continuous Manufacturing”. I prowled
