ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Advisement: Please see your advisor regularly, at least once each semester during the
advisement/scheduling period. Please refer to the BU catalog for additional information.
Standards: A grade of C or higher in Introduction to Corporate Finance is required to major in
finance. A cumulative QPA of 2.0 or better in the major and overall is required for
graduation. Thirty (30) of the final 60 credits must be taken at BU; 60 of the 120 credits
required for graduation must be earned at a 4-year college/university. Course requirements
for a major in finance include College of Business core courses and all finance electives.
Quantitative requirement: Either ECON 156 or MATH 123 will satisfy the requirement. If you
have plans to pursue a graduate business degree program, MATH 123, Essentials of Calculus is
highly recommended.
Diversity Requirement: Effective with the fall 1993 semester, students must complete six
credit hours (2 courses) in “diversity-focused” courses as identified in the class schedule
booklet. By planning carefully, you may be able to meet the diversity requirement by selecting
courses which also meet general education requirements.
University Course Withdrawal Policy: A limit of four (4) course withdrawals during the degree
program shall apply.
University Course Repeat Policy: A maximum of four courses (not more than 14 credit hours) in
which grades of C-, D or E have been earned may be repeated.
University Pass/Fail Policy: A maximum of two free elective courses may be taken on a
pass/fail basis. No College of Business course can be taken on a pass/fail basis.
40% Rule: 40% (48 credits) or 16 courses of the 120 total credits required for a degree must
be at the 300 or 400 level. The only exception is that Principles of Accounting II may count
as one of these courses if you take Principles of Accounting I and II in lieu of Financial
Accounting.
Electives In Business: Any course offered with a prefix of BSED, ACCT, MIS, MGMT, ITM, FIN,
MKTG, or BLAW other than the core courses, can be a business elective for business majors in
any department including Finance with one exception: BSED 101 Introduction to Business has
been approved as a Group B – Social Science course, but is primarily intended for non-business
majors, and it may not be taken by business majors once they have completed six or more
credits in other business subjects.
*BSED 333 & ACCT 321 – Required of majors who entered BU as freshmen in the fall 2007 or
thereafter.
**FIN 120, Personal Finance Decisions, has been approved as a “Values, Ethics & Responsible
Decision Making” course, and may be taken for that purpose by business majors only if they
have not yet completed six credits in other business courses. It is not a business elective.
FIN 432, Internship in Finance, may not be used to meet the required minimum of 18 credit
hours for the Specialized Requirements for a major in Finance. It can be a business elective.
When selecting elective courses, be sure you have taken the proper prerequisites. Also, once
you have taken a course in a subject, do not take a similar course below that level: e.g.,
once you take Calculus, don’t then enroll in Pre-Calculus. This is a waste of scarce
resources.
Note: “It is the responsibility of the student to know and observe the academic policy and
regulations of the university, to confine registration to courses for which the prerequisites
have been satisfied, and to meet the requirements for graduation.” (BU Catalog, Academic
Policies, Practices and Services)
