I hope that this change will make the application process easier. The timeline for CoCurricular funding of Spring 2016 is as follows: Applicants will apply between March 1st and March 31st. Applications will be reviewed by the Finance Committee and perhaps other selected Senators in April. The SSCC will approve applications as soon as the SSCC meeting on April 18th. RECOMMENDED ACTION: I recommend that the SSCC approve the new CoCurricular Funding Application. From: Rose Uche, SSCC Representative and Events Committee Member Subject: Approval for Budget for 2016 March Town Hall Meeting BACKGROUND: The
Town Hall meeting
is an informal public
meeting
that gives the students of Chabot College an opportunity to get together to discuss emerging issues and to voice concerns and preferences for their school RECOMMENDED ACTION: Considering the budget allocated to the Events hosted by the Student Senate, the possible food prices for the upcoming town hall is highly alarming. This could be as a result of the change in season. However, the Events committee requests that the Senate approve the budget of $487 (Tax th
Excluded) for the Town Hall event that is going to take place in the Grand Court, on the 9
of March, 2016. FOR SSCC USE ONLY Moved by: ___________________ Disposition: PASS FAIL POSTPONED Second by: ____________________ Other: _____________ Agenda Proposal Item: 6.5 From: Shoshanna Tenn Subject: GNST 51 Class Schedule for Summer and Fall BACKGROUND: GNST 51 is a leadership lab course designed to support Student Senators and other student leaders on campus, such as club officers. The course has traditionally met on Monday afternoons when there is no SSCC meeting. The class offers handson leadership opportunities plus specialized training in subjects such as shared governance, publicity, event planning, effective written correspondences, leadership styles, conflict resolution, and team building. Two years ago, GNST 51 was offered in both fall and spring semesters, but the classes were quite small (I believe as small as 4 or 5 students.) I offered GNST 51 in fall 2014 and had a class of 9 or 10, and then tried to offer it in spring 2015 to Senators who had been unable to take it in the fall, but only 3 Senators enrolled, and I decided to cancel the class. Part of the problem is that Senators can only take the class once, and not many club officers have expressed interest in the class. This past fall, I taught the class to 9 Senators and one club officer, and it worked out well, but I didn’t offer it in spring as I didn’t think there would be enough students. Last year, after the spring class was canceled, I suggested making the class
mandatory
for new Senators, as it is important to keep this class going to provide support and community building for student leaders.
We now need to decide how to schedule this class for next year, and whatever is decided should be indicated in the Student Senate application packet, so that applicants and candidates understand the schedule and can plan accordingly
. RECOMMENDED ACTION: GNST 51 might be most helpful to Senators if it is offered in the
summer
as well as in the fall for Senators who cannot take it over the summer.
If the Senator is in support of this, I will request that the College schedule it for both summer and fall of next year. I would also like the Senate to consider
whether it would be good to make the class mandatory (either summer or fall) for all new incoming Senators. Note: The Student Senate has traditionally covered the registration fees for the class to all Senators so that no one turns away for lack of funds. There are no textbooks required. From: Sara Parker, Former Faculty Advisor to SSCC (20122014) Subject: Task Force Recommendations on Student Senate Advising BACKGROUND: This past summer Chabot Administrators initiated some changes that have affected advising for Student Senate. For several years and up through spring 2015 a Faculty Advisor was designated as the primary Advisor to Senate and provided a halftime reassignment (20 hours/week) to support student senators in all of their various projects and goals. However, a fulltime Director of Student Life was hired in Fall 2014, and beginning in Fall 2015, Chabot Administration cut the Faculty Advisor’s time to 25% time, or 9 hours per week, with the idea that the Director of Student Life would use more of his time to support Student Senate. At this time, Faculty Advisor Shoshanna Tenn voiced strong disagreement with the decision, arguing that the role of an administrator is distinct from that of a faculty advisor and that more support for Senate was needed. To resolve this issue, the Chabot College President asked me to lead a Task Force to look into the question of how SSCC could best be supported and to make recommendations regarding future advising for SSCC. This Task Force convened several times in Fall 2015 and is now ready to make its recommendations to Chabot President Susan Sperling. I would like to share the final recommendations of the Task Force with the Student Senate. RECOMMENDED ACTION: I recommend that the Senate hear and discuss the findings of the SSCC Advising Task Force and decide if it would like to add any statements before the Recommendations are presented to the Chabot College President.
