Meeting called to order at 6:40 PM
1. Welcome/Introductions
a. Kurt asked everyone to introduce themselves and what they did for a living one at a time.
Everyone did so. Kirsten Lima introduced herself as the Dean of Applied Technology
And Business. She thanked everyone for attending our advisory meeting.
2. II. Review of Minutes
a. Copies of the last advisory meeting (April 16, 2015) were provided. The minutes were
reviewed. Ron Bridges made a motion to approve the minutes and Roy Doral seconded it.
All approved the minutes as printed.
3. Automotive Students Success, Enrollment Data:
a. Kurt explained and reviewed the Perkins Data areas 1, 2, 3, 4, 5a, and 5b
i. Perkins data is 2 years behind but accurate
ii. Showed comparison of other school like ours in the local area
b. In area #2 Kurt talked about needing Automotive Lab Assistants
4. Curriculum
a. Kurt explained about our new Certs, Degrees, and dual enrollment program
b. Adam Cheveres asked if Hybrid Certification was approved.
c. Jon Fowkes indicated that the smog class is part of the apprenticeship program (APAU
classes). Steve Small said that might have to be changed.
d. Kristen explained the dual enrolment and how the credit for students will work. Dual
enrollment with Eden ROP – Launch in spring 2016 for ATEC 50.
e. Under Consideration
i. Non-credit for ASE test prep classes. Working on this but would be an online
course. Need to work with text book vendors for this. Jon Fowkes indicated that
apprenticeship now requires ASE certification for graduation to journey level
technicians. Per Kurt, many of our instructors are allowing ASE certs or pass
scores in place of the course final exam.
ii. Hybrid delivery of course lecture content
iii. Revisions to ATEC52, the online career exploration course. Will be geared toward
high school
iv. Engine Machining, ATEC63A/B have been removed from our program
v. Electronic Text books
5. Relations
a. Jon Fowkes brought up the importance of Work Hands application. It is like “Face Book”
for technicians.
b. Advisory committee and new members
c. Industry, Automotive Service Council of California (ASCCA), Steve Small is a member
and involved with them.
d. BMW program
e. High Schools and ROP
f. Marketing exposure
6. Instruction - Kurt
a. Offering of almost every class each semester as much as possible.
b. BMW program – grads are finding jobs
c. Focus on students to take ASE tests (previously noted), plus MACS certification
d. Safety – no serious incidents.
i. Steve commented on a recent incident regarding safety glasses. A student took of
his glasses than disconnected a fuel line and got some fuel injector cleaner in his
eyes. We looked up the MSDA sheet and followed the instructions. Student
advised to seek medical attention if needed. Report filed with campus safety.
e. Jon Fowkes brought up the importance of safety glasses
7. Faculty - Kurt
a. We are looking for part time faculty. We need subs plus more to run the full range of
classes, especially at night.
b. NATEF – instructor required to take 20 hours of training per year, often on their own time
and expense
c. Faculty attend Web training, after market (Carquest), conferences, Equipment providers,
BAR, etc.
d. Faculty must have ASE G1, A6, plus cert in the area they teach.
8. Facilities
a. No changes since our last meeting except for a new sink in the main auto lab.
9. Tools and Equipment
a. Steven Small advise that new Farret 44 were being perched to replace the old VAT 40’s
b. New cut away Hybrid trainer
10. Supplies
a. Kurt explained Perkins funding plus and donations we get.
11. Budget
a. Kurt explained the following
i. State one time funding
ii. Perkins - $99,036
iii. Measure B funds $210,000. Will be ending the end of this school year.
iv. BMW – OE, new vehicles, tools and equipment to service the BMW fleet vehicles
v. TAACCT Grant – Purchased 2012 VW TDI and 2013 Honda Civic CNG
vi. Facility use proceeds – Tools/equipment/seats for instructors, student scholarships
12. NATEF - Kurt
a. Self-Evaluation was done in October 2015
b. The committee today approves us moving forward with NATEF renewal accreditation.
c. On Site NATEF evaluation spring 2016
d. Roy Doral volunteered Rafael Andrade, his employee and former student that graduated
more than 7 years ago.
13. Job Outlook, Changes & Trends - Kurt
a. Reviewed statistics. See power point for the data
b. Jon Fowkes – Working on funding from the Fed Gov. for APAU and non-APAU
programs.
14. Observations and recommendations to improve Chabot’s Automotive Program
a. Hunter reps offered to do demos for any of our classes/students on their equipment.
15. Facilities (Walk Through, review / Evaluation)
a. Invited the committee to walk through the facilities and feel free to look around
16. Meeting adjourned at 8:40 PM.
