PRBC Report Sandra – Ken and I have contacted all the committees to remind them that we need their representation at PRBC. Kathy – How about committees that cannot find someone to attend PRBC prepare a summary of what is happening in their committee? Obviously we would like live representation but as a last resort we would have feedback on what they are discussing. Sandra – All committees are doing their best to follow guidelines and include participation. Faculty Prioritization Kathy – There were many compelling presentations over the last two meetings. There is a revised rating sheet for scoring the positions. The first ranking needs to be done by Friday December 13th. Tram – There will be a first ranking of the 20 positions. The bottom two positions numbers 19 & 20 will be eliminated and then there will be a re-vote and ranking for the final 18 positions. Tram – What is the timeline for the 2nd level faculty prioritization? Sandra – How many faculty positions are available to be filled at Chabot? Kathy – We don’t know at this time. I could not get an answer from the board. Sara – Marco suggested that in future faculty prioritization meetings the secret ballot for prioritization needs to be changed. PRBC Minutes December 11, 2013 P age |2 Ken – Patricia Shannon mentioned, at last week’s meeting that once this faculty prioritization takes place the group will continue to meet to revisit the faculty hiring process. The present method is at least 10 years old. Dean’s Summary Review Sandra – The dean’s summary of Program Reviews are due at the end of today. Marcia – When looking at the Program Review requests I don’t know where some of the requests will be granted. For example, extra release time for coordination? Or a part time classified position? Connie – The budget committee is doing a great job! However, what we found many times, when looking at requests is we needed more information to make a good decision. In many of the requests there were grant opportunities for equipment and supplies. We need to identify those areas so it will free up money for other requests. Right now we have some roll over money from last year that has created some short term opportunities. People need to realize that from a spending perspective the general fund is flat. Ken – When consolidating all the program review requests it became apparent that the resource requests are not routed through the committees that should be involved with the request and decision. There is a disconnect between the committee for making a decision on the request and the program review resource request. Connie – We need to develop a process with all the people who are involved in grants and all the people asking for categorical spending to look for overlaps. Kathy – How about creating a routing slip, or check list, to make sure all the proper committees have reviewed the request? Yvonne – I put together a newsletter showing all the grants available and their resources. Connie – Maybe an annual event at Chabot that could educate people about the available grant opportunities. Assessments in Math & English by Cindy Stubblebine and Kristine Land Cindy – I am working with the Hayward Promise Network (HPN) and math at Chabot to coordinate the Early Assessment Program (EAP) to determine readiness to college level math. The EAP assessment takes place in the junior year of high school in both math and English. Students get three score levels: college ready, conditional college ready and not college ready. If a student scores at the college ready they do not have take the assessment test for math at Chabot College. Tram – Studies have shown that if a person does not take a math class in their senior year of high school then their math scores take a dip. Like anything, the student needs to stay engaged in the subject area to stay current. Kathy – Is it possible to have Chabot instructors teach these courses at the high school? Cindy – Yes. We are also looking into providing instruction to the high school teacher to guide them in these classes. We are also working on contextualizing the math class at the high school. PRBC Minutes December 11, 2013 P age |3 Christine – The first assessments for English are not very promising. Over 800 students were assessed as not ready for college level English. We believe the timed writing assessments are not giving us accurate results. We do not do timed writing assessments at Chabot. We focus on the process and are process oriented. SSSP – Becky Plaza Three funded cores services that must be provided by the college. Every student will need to complete an orientation, assessment in English and math, counseling and a student ed plan. Our funding will be based on how well we provide these services. SSSP Meetings are Wednesdays from 10 to 12 PM. Meeting was adjourned at 5:00 PM
