Funding Source: General Categorical Grant Grant name: % % % Justification: Why is this position necessary? Degree Works is a Degree Audit program purchased by Chabot College a few years ago but have not been implemented and release due to a lack of personnel available to update and facilitate program. The Degree Work coordinator primary role will be to update the degree audit program, train users and maintain program to ensure accuracy. The Degree Works program will provide a tool to guide students, counselors and evaluator in course planning. The degree audit will be considered unofficial but serve as a guide. The official degree audit will still be performed by evaluators. Degree Works will serve our students, counselors, student services and entire institution. What educational programs or institutional purposes does this position support? How does the request relate specifically to your Program Review, the College’s Strategic Plan, and/or Accreditation Recommendations? The Degree Works Coordinator position speaks directly to many of the College Strategic Plan Initiatives. The ones that standout the most are: Learn more about our students - Degree works can serve as a tool for gathering accurate data and information about our students. This information can be used to support student progress and success. Help students to monitor their progress along their pathway - Degree works provides students with a reliable resource for monitoring their progress toward various educational goals. This supports students in taking ownership and initiatve of their education. Help the undecided to define a career/ed goal - Degree works allows students to easily view their progress toward various educational goals. This is a valuable tool for students and counselors when dicussing decision making and educational goals. Secure funding to support this goal - SSSP funding speaks directly to this position. Where will the individual work? To whom will the person report? Are there any special equipment/facilities needs to be considered? The Degree Works coordinator will work out of Admissions and Records and report to the Director of Admissions and Records. It would make sense for this person to have a close relationship with our current evaluators. Technology such as duel screen computer and access to student records will be need to update the Degree Works program. What is the consequence of not funding this position? The consequence of not funding this position will result in an inability to make use of a valuable resource, the Degree Works program. Counselors and Evaluators will continue to perform degree audit by reviewing each student record, requirement by requirement, unit by unit each time we work with a student, which leads a tremendous amount of duplicated work and wasted resources. Students will perform inaccurate self degree checks and continue to have trouble calculating units and GPA when applying for transfer. What alternative approaches have been considered in meeting the programmatic demands of this request? Admissions and Records has been working to find currently employed personnel to update the Degree Works program so that it can be release for campus use, however the demand of this endeavor is tremendous and beyond the description of our current personnel. To update and implement Degree Works, the campus needs a team working on updates and training. This can start with hiring one Degree Works coordinator to get things started and better understanding of the program. How will the campus community (students, staff, faculty, and community) be positively impacted by filling this position? The campus community will benefit tremendously from this position. This position will serve as a first step in getting Degree Works ready for use for the entire campus. Students will have a reliable place they can go to view their own progress. Counselors will be able to view a student's progress and immediately work with the student to support them toward completion. Evaluators can use Degree Works as a guide and grant a greater number of degrees in a timely manner. Degree works also serves to increase the number of student education plans and accurately captures the service, which is a requirement of SSSP. What other personnel currently provide support to this program and these students? Evaluators and Counselors perform manual degree audit for each student who requests one. The amount of human resource used to perform manual degree audit will be save with a reliable and accurate Degree Works program. It also lowers the chances of human error. Many colleges have a reliable degree audit system for students, counselors and evaluators to use as a guide in degree checks and education planning, however evaluators and counselors will still play a vital role in official degree checks and granting degrees.
