Justification:
Why is this position necessary?
There is a critical need to update brochures, the Fire Technology web page, and resources students
need to understand the new pathway for a Fire Service Career. Also, there is a need for an assistant
who is computer savvy, with the capability to use Microsoft Office and Adobe Web / Graphic Design to
develop the flyers, maintain the Fire website, and maintain recordkeeping procedures for the
certification training standards that Chabot Fire Academy must adhere. This position will be fielding
calls regarding the Fire Program in the Coordinator's absence and will be preparing the State requests
for courses and the certificates for issue to students. Also, reaccreditation as Regional Fire Training
Program requires proof of sufficient administrative support for program which is currently lacking.
What educational programs or institutional purposes does this position support? How does the request
relate specifically to your Program Review, the College’s Strategic Plan, and/or Accreditation Recommendations?
This position is a combination instructional assistant with web and graphic design skills so that the
growing administrative responsibilities can be split between the Fire Tech Coordinator and the
Instructional Assistant. Reaccreditation as a Regional Fire Training Program requires sufficient
administrative / clerical support for the program which we are currently lacking. During the final year of
the Career Pathway Trust grant, this position will be essential to help design a more interactive web
presence for middle school to high school students to engage with the educational opportunities at
Chabot College. Also, there will be a return to Community Education offerings of Fire Courses that do
not fit the "unit" mold. Therefore, the position will work with Community Education strictly for the
Continuing Education course offerings for Fire and EMS classes not available within the current
Program Offerings. A key role of the Instructional Assistant will include managing the time sheets for
adjuncts and assistants, along with insuring all approved purchases are made in a timely manner.
Where will the individual work? To whom will the person report? Are there any special equipment/facilities needs
to be considered?
This person will work in Room 1504 with the Fire Technology Coordinator. There was a previous
request for an iMac with the MS Office and Adobe Creative Design Suite including web design to
support this program. This computer would be needed by the Instructional Assistant to complete the
Career Pathway component of this job responsibility.
What is the consequence of not funding this position?
Currently, the Fire Technology Coordinator is managing 5 Programs and maintains a teaching load of
9 CAH. As the only full time position in Fire Technology, it is not possible to stay up on the growing
demands of the program, especially with the Career Pathway Trust included in the equation.
Reaccreditation as a Regional Fire Training Program by State Fire Training could be compromised if I
cannot prove sufficient administrative and clerical support for program delivery. The estimated time
that the position would be needed and funded is as follows:
48 weeks x 20 hours x 20.52 Instructional Assistant with Graphic Design skills
What alternative approaches have been considered in meeting the programmatic demands of this request?
So far, the Fire Technology Coordinator has been doing this along with other responsibilities, yet
continues to fall behind in some of the Discipline responsibilities as there is no one to pick up that
slack when the Coordinator's attention is needed at the Fire Academy. We considered passing on the
web design issues to Chabot's new webmaster, but it does not appear that this approach would be a
viable option in the near future as he is currently tasked with larger scale operations.
How will the campus community (students, staff, faculty, and community) be positively impacted by filling this
position?
If the Instructional Assistant with Graphic/Web Design skill is funded with the right person in the
position, the benefit to this Division will be tremendous. First, the improvement in the Fire and EMS
advertising on the web from an instructional perspective will have a greater interactive interest from
students. Next, the processing of instructional and ancillary documents (time sheets, evaluations,
disbursements, purchase orders) will be more timely, allowing the Coordinator to work more one on
one with the instructors on Learning Outcome Assessments and Curricular Issues.
What other personnel currently provide support to this program and these students?
JoAnn Cerefice is managing part of this, and even has a Fire Technology instruction or her answering
machine. The rest of this is currently handled by the Fire Technology Coordinator as time permits.
