1. Rationale for your proposal. Please include the rationale from your program review and unit plan. Rationale should
include things such as student learning and service area data and outcomes, difficulty in serving students, health and
safety concerns and/or any other information that speaks to the criteria listed previously.
(1) Clerical help, part-time (Ref.: IV. Budget Summary)
The PACE program staff currently consists of a PACE coordinator (Susan Tong), a counselor (Julie Machado) and course instructors,
most of whom are adjunct. The PACE coordinator and counselor positions are “part-time” positions. Without an administrative
assistant the tasks usually performed by this individual have become the responsibility of the program coordinator and counselor
which essentially takes time away from working directly with students to answer phones, make appointments, explain the program to
everyone who calls in or emails for information. Not the best use of a coordinator or counselor’s limited amount of time.
Request:
Clerical help so that the counselor and coordinator can use their assigned time most appropriately.
Total number of hours per week: 10 hours.
(2) Tutorial help (Ref.: I. Basic success and Equity; III. Course Review)
The PACE program serves about 800 students. Most of these students are older students who work full time and have a family. The
students we serve depend on our program to get their AA degree (10%) and/or fulfill their transfer requirements (61%).
In fall 2010, most of our students (67% vs 45% in non-PACE sections) were part-time students who take Saturday and/or evening
classes (43%), or a combination of day and evening & Saturday classes (43%).
Request:
Face-to-face tutoring in English and Math in the evening and on some Saturdays.
Peer advising
Online peer advising and tutoring.
Total number of hours per week: 5 hours
2. Statements about the alignment with the strategic plan and program review are required. Indicate here any information
from advisory committees or outside accreditation reviews that is pertinent to the proposal.
In general, evening and Saturday students do not have access to the same resources (tutoring, library services) as day students. It is crucial that
PACE students get tutorial help, and adequate support from the PACE counselor and coordinator.
