Visit the CSU Application Filing Status webpage (www.csumentor.edu/filing_status) and follow these steps: 1. Select your level. (e.g. Undergraduate or International) 2. Select the term for which you are applying. (e.g. Spring 2016) 3. If the CSU campus you are interested in says CLOSED, that means they are no longer accepting applications for the term you'd like to apply. 4. If the CSU campus you are interested in says OPEN, click on VIEW to see OPEN MAJORS and the CAMPUS NOTICE FOR TRANSFERS. Verify that your campus is accepting applications for your major and read the notice for transfer students. The notice may indicate the deadline for submitting the CSUMentor application. Check if you already have a CSUMentor account. (www.csumentor.edu) If you applied to a CSU in high school, you can retrieve your account. Otherwise, establish your account. Consider establishing a separate working email address. Universities will often communicate ONLY through email about the status of your application and any documents needed to move your application forward for further consideration. Make sure to check the email SPAM folder. Access your college transcripts. You will be asked to enter ALL colleges attended, including dates of attendance, and where needed, course(s) taken and grades earned. Determine whether you will log into your college’s student account or request transcripts to access your academic records. Gather financial information. Your family’s financial information (2014 income and 2015 estimated income) is required if you would like to obtain an application fee waiver for the CSU application or apply for the EOP program. You will also be asked about your family size. Determine residency status. You need to know how long you have been in California since the CSU system calculates your tuition based on your residency status. Calculate your CSU-transferable GPA. The CSU-transferable G.P.A. being asked for on the CSU application is not always the one listed in your ClassWeb account. Use the enclosed handout as a guide for calculating your CSU-transferable G.P.A.. Except for some engineering majors, almost all CSUs require completion of the Golden Four by the end of Spring for Fall transfer (or Summer for Winter Quarter and Spring Semester transfer; or Fall for Spring Quarter transfer). At Chabot College, the courses that meet the Golden Four are: Oral Communication: Communication Studies 1, 20, 46 Term & Year: Written Communication: English 1A Term & Year: Critical Thinking: Communication Studies 46; English 4, 7; History 5 Term & Year: Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning: Psych 5; Math 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 15, 16, 20, 31, 33, 36, 37, 40, 41, 43 Term & Year: Grade Earned: _____ Grade Earned: Grade Earned: Grade Earned: Determine if and what kind degree(s) you are earning from Chabot College. The CSU Application has a section for students to indicate they are earning their AA-T or AS-T in a specified major. Not all Chabot majors are AA-T or AS-T majors. AA and AS degrees aren’t AA-T or AS-T degrees. You are to only indicate an AA-T or AS-T if you, indeed, are earning this type of degree. To learn more about the AA-T and AS-T so you can complete this portion of the application accurately, please visit: www.chabotcollege.edu/Counseling/TECS/CSUTransferDegrees.asp Questions about this packet should be directed to: Frances Fon Transfer Counselor/Instructor – ffon@chabotcollege.edu 8/27/15 4 Calculating your CSU-transferable GPA Your grade point average (GPA) is calculated by dividing the total amount of grade points earned by the total amount of attempted units with grades. Your grade point average may range from 0.0 to 4.0. STEP 1: A student's total grade points are calculated by multiplying the number of class units attempted by the value associated with each grade earned. For example: Grade Units Attempted Value Grade Points Earned (Units x Value) A B C D F W 3 3 3 3 3 0 4 3 2 1 0 0 12 9 6 3 0 0 STEP 2: The student's GPA is then determined by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the number of units attempted. Thus, if a student takes four 3-unit courses and earns 3 B's and 1 C, the GPA is as follows: Grade Earned Value Unit Total Grade Points (Units x Value) B B B C Totals: 3 3 3 2 3 3 3 3 3 12 Units 9 9 9 6 33 Grade Points Total Grade Points (33) divided by Total Units (12) = 2.75 GPA Most universities ask for your gpa in transferable classes only. The CSU-transferable gpa being asked for on the CSU application is not always the one listed in your ClassWeb account. You need to determine which courses are CSU-transferable in order to calculate your CSUtransferable GPA. Questions about this packet should be directed to: Frances Fon Transfer Counselor/Instructor – ffon@chabotcollege.edu 8/27/15 5 How do I know what classes to incorporate into this calculation and determine my CSUtransferable gpa? If the class is or was on www.assist.org for your academic major during the year you took the course, incorporate the grade into your gpa calculation. If the class is or was on the CSU GE or IGETC pattern during the term you took the course, incorporate the grade(s) into your gpa calculation. GE patterns are available at the Career & Transfer Center, Front Desk Counseling, and online at www.assist.org. Just visit the site and select “CSU GE Breadth” or “IGETC” located under “Help Topics” to get started. Just because the class is not on on the CSU GE or IGETC doesn’t mean it isn’t CSUtransferable. For these other classes or if you aren’t sure about a specific course, visit www.assist.org and select “Transferable Courses” located under “Help Topics” to determine whether or not it is a CSU-transferable class. Other Notes: R (Repeats) - When the course in which you received a substandard grade (D or F) is repeated, the most recent grade should be calculated in your GPA in lieu of the previous grade(s). P/NP (Pass/No Pass) or CR/NC (Credit/No Credit) do not receive grade points and are not factored in the calculation of your GPA. W (Withdrawals) do not receive grade points and are not factored in the calculation of your GPA. I (Incomplete) grades represent an instructor-student agreement that the student may complete the course work by the end of the following semester and receive an appropriate letter grade. If the student does not complete the course work before this deadline, the right of the student to make up the work is forfeited. The "I" will be replaced with the alternate letter grade assigned by the instructor at the time the incomplete was assigned. Now you are ready to calculate your CSU-transferable gpa! You can manually calculate your gpa (see steps #1 and #2) or use an online gpa calculator like the one below to calculate your gpa for all CSU-transferable courses: www.csus.edu/gradstudies/AdditionalResources/GPACalculator.html Questions about this packet should be directed to: Frances Fon Transfer Counselor/Instructor – ffon@chabotcollege.edu 8/27/15 6 PAGES FROM THE CSU MENTOR APPLICATION THAT ARE PRONE TO CONFUSION & ERROR PAGE 1: ENROLLMENT INFORMATION ENTRY STATUS Selecting 60-89.5 semester units will ensure students not having to enter high school coursework on application screens 8-9.
