(Firewalls and Network Security)
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Identify elements of firewall design, types of security threats and
responses to security attacks. Use best practices to design, implement and monitor a network
security plan. Learn security incident post mortem analysis and on going network security
activities.
PREREQUISITES: ITNW 1325 , ITNW 2301 and ITSY 2300

This course will be best taught in a computer lab environment utilizing practical means to
instruct and reinforce learning. The above listed texts come with laboratory exercises.
WECM LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1. Demonstrate server support skills through firewall implementation and exhibition of software
skills.
2. Use system tools, practices, and relevant technologies to implement a security plan.
3. Evaluate practices, tools, and technologies to identify security breaches, sources of attacks,
and protect mission critical systems.
4. Establish an appropriate level of security based on an analysis of security logs.
5. Use relevant tools to secure a network, respond to and follow up on various types of attacks.
ADDITIONAL LEARNING OUTCOMES RECOMMENDED:
A1. Configure telecommunication and network hardware security
A2. Demonstrate the ability to comply with local security policy and take appropriate action
during an incident
A3. Change a security policy based upon a security breach
A4. Design an access control list to permit or deny IP traffic

A6. Identify abnormal processes and incorporate best practices and procedures
A7. Identify security exposures, vulnerabilities and countermeasures
COURSE ASSESSMENT: Two major exams with quizzes at every class meeting, Laboratory
practical exercises and a student semester project. Student project to develop a security plan for
a medium sized company or organization.
