Iowa State University • Intercollegiate Athletics 1800 S. 4th St. • Jacobson Building • Ames, Iowa 50011 THE TOP 15 STORY LINES 1. IOWA STATE HEAD COACH GENE CHIZIK gets his first taste of the Iowa StateIowa intrastate series before a VERSUS national television audience ... the Cyclones are 0-2 after losses to Kent State (23-14) and Northern Iowa (24-13) in Jack Trice Stadium ... the No. 1 culprit in the pair of Iowa State losses are the seven turnovers committed by the Cyclones through two games. 2. IOWA STATE has won six of the last nine games in the series dating back ... the series was resumed in 1977 after a 33-year hiatus ... two years ago, Iowa came into Ames ranked eighth nationally and a pre-game favorite ... instead, Iowa State rolled over Iowa, 23-3 ... Iowa State forced five turnovers, recovering three fumbles, intercepting two passses and getting three sacks ... ISU’s defense never let the Hawkeyes get the ball past the Cyclone 26. 3. ISU QUARTERBACK BRET MEYER makes his 39th start in this week’s game. Meyer is second among NCAA signal-callers in total offense (8,456 yards) and his 1,530 career offensive plays make him by far the busiest collegiate football player of the last four years (second/Colt Brennan, Hawaii 1,380). Despite this and being sacked 107 times he has never missed a game because of injury. He passed Major Applewhite of Texas (8,059, 1998-2001) on Aug. 30 to move into fourth place on the all-time Big 12 total offense list. Last week, Meyer passed Joel Klatt of Colorado (7,708 2002-05) to move into fourth place on the all-time Big 12 passing yards list with 7,751. 4. UNDER ATHLETICS DIRECTOR JAMIE POLLARD, Iowa State has crushed previous records, selling more than 36,000 season tickets. This, after the Cyclones posted their two largest crowds in school history in 2006: 55,518 vs. Northern Iowa and 55,338 vs. Nebraska. Last week, ISU topped those crowds with an all-time record of 56,795 fans against Northern Iowa. 5. SUMRALL LOVES THE NEW KICKOFF RETURN RULES The junior has had 41-yard kickoff returns in each of the first two games. He has figured large in Iowa State’s plan to spread out the passing game. Sumrall caught a career-high seven passes for 71 yards against Northern Iowa. 7. IOWA STATE PLACEKICKER BRET CULBERTSON is the among most accurate placekickers in school history, hitting on 28-of-40 field career field-goal attempts. The former walk-on has made all of his 77 PAT tries. The Des Moines-Lincoln graduate is 2327 inside 40 yards and had a career-long 52-yard three-pointer against Texas Tech last season. Overall, the senior has made 105-of-117 kicks in his career. Culbertson missed attempts of 44 and 47 yards against Kent State and a 49-yard attempt against UNI. 8. LINEBACKER ALVIN “ACE” BOWEN led the nation with 12.91 tackles per game last season. He begins 2007 as a consensus firstteam all-Big 12 selection and made nine tackles against Kent State. He owns 204 career tackles. It is easy to see why. In ISU’s 2005 Houston Bowl season (7-5), the Cyclones outscored opponents off turnovers, 119-57 (+62). Last season, opponents outscored Iowa State, 67-30 off turnovers in a 4-8 season. In the last two weeks, seven ISU turnovers have cost the Cyclones dearly, leading to 17 opponent points while ISU has yet to tally a score on three opponent turnovers. 10. THROWBACK UNIFORMS Iowa State will honor the 1977 Iowa State Peach Bowl team Saturday by wearing vintage uniforms against Iowa. The 1977 ISU squad posted an 8-4 record, including a 24-21 win at No. 9 Nebraska, the Cyclones’ last victory in Lincoln, Neb. Iowa State, led by the late running back Dexter Green, who rushed for 1,420 yards and 15 TDs. 11. HALL OF FAME COACH EARLE BRUCE will be in Ames this weekend as a part of Iowa State’s celebrations of the 1977 season. Bruce is the color man on the Ohio State football radio network but received permission to attend this weekend’s festivities. Bruce coached Iowa State to eight-win seasons in 1976, 1977 and 1978 with a Peach Bowl appearance in 1977 and a Hall-ofFame Bowl appearance in 1978. 12. THE 1977 IOWA STATE AT IOWA GAME marked the resumption of a series that ran from 1894-1920, 1933-34 and was resumed after years of political wrangling. The games from 1977-80 were played in Iowa City. In the 1977 contest, an Iowa team that would finish 5-6 beat the 8-4 Peach Bowl-bound Cyclones, 12-10 before a national ABC-TV audience. 13. IOWANS ON THE IOWA STATE ROSTER total 42.Twenty Cyclones in the two deep are from Iowa. Wide receiver Todd Blythe (Indianola) and quarterback Bret Meyer (Atlantic) are the only in-state Cyclones to be competing in their fourth Iowa State-Iowa game. 14. IOWA STATE’S SMITH & SMITH ARE IOWANS MAKING A DIFFERENCE Free safety James Smith has made 20 tackles in the first two games to lead the team. He had earned a starting spot in fall camp in 2006 but the Council Bluffs (across the river from Omaha) native suffered a broken ankle that kept him from playing until the eighth game of last season. Middle linebacker Jesse Smith is a former walkon from Altoona, Iowa who played at Southeast Polk High School (same school as Chicago Bears QB Kyle Orton). He has 17 tackles. 15. IOWA STATE RB J.J. BASS had four runs of 15 or more yards in the first half of the season-opening game against Kent State. Iowa State did not get its fifth run of more than 15 yards until the 11th game of last season. 16. CYCLONES IN THE NFL include Lamarcus Hicks (DB/Detroit), James Reed (DT, Kansas City), Oliver Ross (OT/Arizona), Ellis Hobbs (DB/Patriots), Sage Rosenfels (QB/ Houston), Tim Dobbins (LB/San Diego), Brent Curvey (DT/Carolina), Reggie Hayward (DE/Jacksonville). 17. FORMER IOWA STATE CO-CAPTAIN ELLIS HOBBS made NFL history Sunday, returning a kickoff and NFL record 108 yards for a touchdown in the New England Patriots’ win over the New York Jets. Hobbs made big plays at Iowa State. He closed his career by making a last-minute interception to seal Iowa State’s win over Miami of Ohio in the 2004 Independence Bowl. 2007 BIG 12 STANDINGS Conf. From the moment Iowa State athletics director Jamie Pollard began a search for a new head football coach, Chizik was at the top of Pollard’s list of potential candidates. He wasn’t alone. Everyone wanted Gene Chizik. It was easy to see why. Chizik had the perfect résumé. He had been assistant head coach and defensive coordinator on Texas’ 2005 national championship team. Before that, three years as defensive coordinator at Auburn, where in the midst of 30 wins in three seasons he earned the Frank Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach. Because of his experience as a defensive coordinator on conference title teams in three different BCS conferences, Chizik was mentioned as a candidate for the most high profile head coaching jobs. Chizik’s track record of preparing players for college football and beyond is unassailable. Amazingly, the new ISU head coach has tutored the last three winners of the Jim Thorpe Award (Carlos Rogers, Michael Huff, Aaron Ross). The honor is given annually to the nation’s top collegiate defensive back. CHIZIK UP CLOSE Born in Tarpon Springs, Fla. Family moved to Clearwater, Fla. when Gene was six years old. Clearwater is part of the TampaSt. Petersburg metropolitan area. Chizik taught third grade for two years at Bauder Elementary School in Seminole, Fla. After school, he walked across the street to help coach football at Seminole HS. Gene has three older sisters. Gene was a Miami Dolphins fan until the Tampa Bay Buccaneers franchise was formed. He backed the Bucs even when the team lost its first 26 games in 1976-77. Gene was a high school linebacker at Clearwater High School. He was also a member of the chess club. His first job was washing cars. His father, Gene, earned a bronze star on Okinawa during the battle of Sugar Loaf Hill in May 1945. Gene Chizik Sr., coached high school football while getting a graduate degree and went on to be principal at Tarpon High School and Largo High School. The best advice Iowa State’s head coach got from his father was “don’t tell me, show me.” Gene’s favorite hobbies include fishing and chess. He loves chess because of the all the different strategy that is involved. His fishing highlight came two years ago when his son, Cally, caught his first fish, a bass, while on vacation. He has an eclectic love of music. Likes country and ABBA. As defensive coordinator, Chizik learned from the best head coaches in the nation’s top collegiate programs while making tremendous contributions toward the enhancement of their national head coaching reputations. The national championship won by Texas in 2005 was the school’s first since 1970. When Auburn won the 2004 SEC Championship game, it was the Tigers’ first league crown since 1989. Chizik’s defense loomed large in Texas’ 2005 national championship season under head coach Mack Brown. The Longhorns ranked eighth nationally in scoring defense, 10th in total defense and fourth in pass efficiency defense. UT allowed opponents to reach 300 yards of total offense only five times in 2005 and held the remaining eight opponents to less than 267 yards. Ten UT defenders were all-Big 12 Conference selections. At Auburn, Chizik’s defenses were unforgiving and set a standard for the rest of the country. In 2004, the Tigers gave up a national low 11.3 points per game en route to an undefeated season. Overall, the Tigers gave up an average of just 277.62 yards of total offense per contest, ranking fifth nationally for the second straight season. The 2003 Auburn defense was fifth nationally in total defense, allowing just 281.6 yards per game, the best total by a Tiger defense in more than a decade. Chizik was also defensive coordinator for four seasons (1998-2001) at Central Florida. He improved a unit that ranked 81st nationally in total defense before his arrival to one that rated 16th in 2001. Chizik coached both linebackers (1998) and the secondary (1999-2001) at UCF. During his tenure with the Golden Knights, Chizik made frequent trips from Orlando to Tampa to study defensive concepts with Buccaneers head coach Tony Dungy and defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. Chizik also coached at Stephen F. Austin University, tutoring linebackers (1992-94) and the secondary (1995-97). He was SFA’s defensive coordinator in 1996 and 1997. Philadelphia Eagle Jeremiah Trotter was his star with the Lumberjacks. He stepped into college coaching at Clemson University (1988-89) as a graduate assistant for a pair of 10-win teams and then worked at Middle Tennessee State (1990-91) as a full-time assistant. The Blue Raiders made the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs in both of his seasons and were conference champions in 1990. Chizik, a native of Clearwater, Fla., and his wife (Jonna) have identical twin daughters (Landry Grace and Kennedy Danielle) and one son, Cally. Iowa quarterback “Chick” Kirk scored all of Iowa’s points on drop kicks. Iowa State captain Ralph McElhinney scored on a 30-yard TD run. Iowa still led 8-7 before Cyclone W.C. Johnson dashed for a 40-yard score when several of the Iowa players stood up and relaxed when a whistle was blown. Johnson bowled over one of two Iowa defenders still trying to stop him. Iowa State refused a holding penalty, and the score gave the Cyclones a 12-8 lead. Iowa State went on to win the game 20-14 before 5,000 spectators. The game featured the Iowa State band, which was able to perform after the Glee Club held a fundraising concert for the band the night before the game. A smallpox scare earlier in the week did not prevent the playing of the game.
