The Global Strategy Lab (GSL) at the University of Ottawa aims to bring cutting-edge science to bear on how global health institutions,
instruments and initiatives are designed in order to better address the most pressing global challenges. GSL integrates analytical,
empirical and big data approaches to craft global strategies that better address transnational health threats and social inequalities. The
projects conducted at the Global Strategy Lab are primarily focused on: 1) generating evidence about different global health strategies;
2) developing new methods for evaluating complex global strategies; and 3) translating research into evidence-based collective action by
working with governments, civil society organizations and international agencies in developing their global strategies.
GSL is looking for an individual to join our team as an investigator / research associate / postdoctoral fellow who will take the lead on
exciting new studies that fall within the scope of GSL’s mandate and builds on the individual’s previous experience. As part of GSL, the
selected applicant will be integral in the design, oversight and execution of various research projects. He/she will be given the opportunity
to develop skills needed for rigorous social sciences research on health policy issues, work across national borders as part of a globally
integrated research team, interact with global decision-makers, and make tangible contributions to ongoing policy processes on pressing
health issues.
There are many exciting research efforts being undertaken right now at GSL. The largest is a four-year $4.6 million project with the
Norwegian Institute of Public Health that aims to design new global governance structures that help international actors collaborate globally
to capitalize on cost-effective and life-saving medicines. Another is work with the World Health Organization to improve the institutional
design of scientific panels that develop clinical, health systems and public health guidance. Yet another is the launch of a Global Health Law
Clinic that matches teams of law students with international agencies to undertake applied research projects on real policy problems the
agencies are facing.
While the core focus is on undertaking and publishing cutting-edge research, GSL also has a strong commitment to knowledge translation
– ensuring that our research influences real-world practice and policy. This goal for maximizing social impact is aided by our location in
Ottawa, the capital of Canada and home to many government agencies, professional associations, civil society organizations, and embassies.
As part of this commitment, the selected applicant will have the opportunity to help lead several knowledge translation activities, as well as
to work with law students and graduate students at the university to ensure future leaders are exposed to this research and mission as well.
The selected applicant will work directly with GSL Director Steven J. Hoffman, an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Ottawa
and Adjunct Associate Professor of Global Health & Population at Harvard University. In addition to being part of GSL, the selected
applicant will also be an important member of a growing stellar team of interdisciplinary scholars who have just formed a new Centre for
Health Law, Policy & Ethics – of which GSL is part. The selected applicant will collaborate with GSL’s Research Coordinator and existing
Postdoctoral Fellow, and be supported by a broader team that includes several research assistants, students and an administrative assistant.
