Creating, building, and managing campaigns




Developed the Pew Charitable Trusts $12 million Wild Australia Program in a partnership with
The Nature Conservancy. Hired and managed the Australian staff in establishing eight
separate campaigns and projects with a strategy that has to date conserved 64 million acres of
land and 1.4 million square kilometers of sea within Australia’s territorial waters.
For Pew’s Health Group, designed a corporate engagement component to their campaign to
stop the overuse of antibiotics in farm animals.
As the President of the Forest Stewardship Council - US, planned campaigns with forest
activists to increase the profile of the FSC and corporate interest in supporting it.
In Somalia, created a campaign to introduce fuel conserving wood and charcoal burning stoves.
Ultimately, the designs have become the stove of choice throughout the country
Strategy development and portfolio growth



Initiated new projects for the philanthropist Paul Allen in four areas with emphasis on those
projects that needed technical innovation (e.g. new software development) in addition to cash
donations.
Revitalized the US-arm of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) by re-building the board,
hiring new staff, developing a long-term strategic plan, and raising funds. The FSC has become
the seal of sustainable forestry in North America and globally. Raised nearly $20 million for
global FSC efforts.
Built World Wildlife Fund’s $20 million grant-making Biodiversity Conservation Network of
conservation and business projects across seven countries in the Asia Pacific region. The
project managed the relationships with 80 different non-profits and businesses.
Coalition building across businesses, civil society groups, and government to achieve
sustainable development with measurable outcomes




Led the Pew Health Group’s efforts in recruiting sympathetic businesses for Pew’s campaign to
eliminate the overuse of antibiotics for non-therapeutic use on farm animals.
Managed the development of a coalition of ranchers, regional politicians, aboriginal groups,
and environmentalists in western Queensland that led to successful river protection.
Headed the negotiation in 2005/6 between the Canadian Boreal Initiative and various major US
and Canadian corporations that encouraged them to become signatories to the Boreal Forest
Framework, a 1.3 billion acre conservation vision with 50% sustainable development and 50%
protection across the Canadian Boreal forest.
Directed the dramatic increase in North American interest in the Forest Stewardship Council
across business and environmental groups while maintaining a close working relationship with
the rival program of the American Forest and Paper Association and its multi-billion dollar
membership.

Senior Director – Philanthropic Initiatives. Established a new group for Paul Allen to expand
his philanthropic giving for ocean conservation, energy development in rural Africa, wildlife
conservation, and STEM education. Examples of specific projects include launching the Paul
G. Allen Ocean Challenge to combat ocean acidification and building an innovative
relationship with one of the largest banks in Africa to promote new loans for solar home
lighting systems.

Senior Officer – Planning and Evaluation. An internal advisor and consultant to the CEO and
Pew Health Group’s Managing Director. Examples include: undertook operations analysis that
helped inform Pew's redesign of its grant making program in the arts; analyzed Pew's approach
to using state-based field staff to augment a diverse group of advocacy campaigns; and, assisted
the Health Group’s leadership in developing its annual plans.
Senior Officer – Environment. During 2006, established Pew’s $12 million program in
Australia by hiring staff and developing a portfolio of land and marine projects that has led to
the conservation of 64 million acres of land and 1.4 million square kilometers of sea.
Negotiated and managed the program as a joint venture with The Nature Conservancy with
each organization contributing 50 percent of the funds.

clients designing and implementing sustainable growth strategies. Clients included Ford
Motor Company and DuPont in the US, the Canadian Boreal Initiative in Canada, and
Macquarie Bank and Australia’s largest insurance company (IAG) in Australia.

Forest Stewardship Council – U.S.
Washington, DC
President. Organization brings businesses, social justice organizations, and environmental
groups together to work on sustainable forest management and the ‘green’ labeling of
products that meet the most rigorous forest management standards in the world.
Reorganized the near defunct USA operations of the international NGO by creating and
implementing a new strategic plan, raising $20 million in funding from foundations and
businesses, establishing new offices and hiring 11 staff in Washington DC and California.
1997-2006
Innovative Environmental Technologies, Inc.
Washington, DC
Founder and President. Company established to manage environmental projects and
businesses. Launched an eco-forestry company, Kikori Pacific Ltd, in Papua New Guinea and a
marketing company, Pacific Woods, in the USA.

World Wildlife Fund US

Director, Biodiversity Conservation Network. Developed and managed a $20 million, 6.5 year
program to evaluate the effectiveness of using business to promote conservation in the Asia
and Pacific regions. Portfolio of projects established 45 businesses, conserved 5.4 million
acres, and improved the quality of life for over 10,000 people in local communities.

Managing Consultant. Led teams that created strategic plans for large U.S. corporations such
as Corning, General Electric, and Rubbermaid. Strategic studies included optical fiber pricing
for world's largest producer, a manufacturing strategy for medical imaging equipment maker,
and identifying and evaluating new product opportunities in the glass and plastics areas.

VITA, Inc.
Somalia
General Manager, Country Representative. Established a national program with over 100 staff
that worked in the refugee camps and cities to conserve forests and develop businesses that
sold wood-burning stoves that consumed 50% less wood than traditional models. Twentyfive years later, models developed have become the de facto standards for use in homes and
refugee camps.
