The Dissertation Defense
• A dissertation defense must be taken by all Ph.D. students. The purpose of the defense
is for you to demonstrate the quality of your research study and that you can defend
the contents of the written dissertation.
• After your advisor and your Ph.D. committee agree that you have adequately completed the original research described in you dissertation proposal, then you will schedule defense of your dissertation.
• A final draft of your dissertation must be approved by your advisor before you can
distribute copies to your committee.
• The final draft of the dissertation should be distributed to all of your committee members at least two weeks prior to the scheduled defense date.
• The dissertation defense has two parts:
(i) A presentation of your dissertation that is open to the public. That is, this part
of the defense can be attended by anyone. Consider this part of the defense as an
educational seminar for other statisticians.
(ii) An oral examination in which you must defend the contents of the entire dissertation (and not just what you presented in (i). This part of the defense is closed
to the public. That is, only you and your committee are present.
• Recommendation: Attend as many presentations of a dissertation defense before as
you can before you have your defense.
• Recommendation: Practice the presentation at last twice. Follow the same advice I
gave for practice presentations of the proposal discussed in Section 5.1 of the course
notes.
• The following questions can be viewed as reminder of how you may be evaluated:
– Is the research original and relevant?
– Did the Ph.D. student demonstrate that he or she understands the cited literature
and how it is related to the dissertation research?
– Is appropriate statistical methodology used for this reasearch?
– Do the results satisfy the research objectives and research scope?
– Are the results adequately discussed with respect to research cited in the literature
review?
– Can the research results in the dissertation be published in statistical journals?

A Quick Way to Make Tables in LaTeX
• Suppose you have output from a package like Matlab, R, or SAS that appear in columns
and you want to make a table from certain columns. You can use SAS to get the
information in LaTeX from.
• Here is an example that can save you a lot of time creating a table in LaTeX. In the
following example, there are 41 rows and 17 columns of data. I want to make a table
of the values in column 1 and columns 6 to 14.
• Using SAS I read in the data, create variables ”a” and ”bs” that are equivalent to the
symbols ”&” and ”\\”, and then output the variables in the desired order to generate
a table in LaTeX.
