Full-time 12-month Lecturer in Indigenous Education
September 2016 to August 2017
The Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia invites applications from experienced
teacher educators with expertise in Indigenous Education for a 12-month full-time (100%) lecturer
position commencing in September 2016. The appointment will be made for 12 months at a time and be
renewable on a yearly basis subject to the satisfactory performance appraisal and the availability of funds.
The Faculty of Education is committed to advancing teaching and leadership in Indigenous Education and
supporting teacher candidates to make contributions to transforming Indigenous education in order to
improve educational outcomes for Aboriginal/Indigenous learners and enhance learning for all students.
Candidates must have a graduate degree with expertise in Indigenous education, a PhD in Education (or a
related field), experience teaching at the post-secondary level as well as in school settings and excellent
communication skills. Evidence of knowledge and leadership in Indigenous education, including the new
curriculum and its relevance to First Peoples Principles of Learning, is essential as is experience working
with Indigenous families and communities. Persons of Indigenous ancestry and/or who possess
knowledge of Indigenous worldview, language and local community are preferred.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide curriculum leadership and teaching in the
undergraduate program. Primary teaching responsibilities will include EDUC 440-Indigenous Education
in Canada with possible contributions to the Faculty’s Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NITEP).
In addition, curriculum leadership will support course coordination, Indigenous education projects with
pre-service and in-service teachers, and curriculum development.
The annual workload for a 12-month Lecturer is 30 credits with duties allocated by Teacher Education
Office and the Associate Dean of Indigenous Education.
