Ernst & Young Leadership and Professional Development
Center Dedication
Anticipation and excitement were
razor sharp as NIU’s College of
Business hosted a ribbon-cutting
ceremony opening the new Ernst &
Young Leadership and Professional
Development Center in Barsema Hall.
Several NIU accountancy alumni who
are Ernst & Young partners came back
to campus for the ceremony
on May 3, 2012.
With an endowment campaign driven by alumnus Lance Smith (ACCY ’84), the Ernst
& Young Leadership and Professional Development Center prepares accountancy
students to be effective leaders and communicators. “Our department does a
wonderful job of educating students on the technical aspects of accounting. But we
wanted to make a stronger commitment to developing their soft skills,” says Jim
Young, Accountancy Department Chair. So Lance Smith enlisted the help of 14 other
Ernst & Young partners to provide a permanent endowment that will contribute to
the operating budget of the center and the ongoing development of NIU graduate
accountancy students. The Ernst & Young Foundation matched the individual
donations – resulting in an initial endowment commitment of over $500,000.

Another Successful Luncheon
The 22nd Annual NIU College of Business
Alumni Luncheon 50th Anniversary Celebration
was a tremendous success! With your help,
it was the largest luncheon hosted by the
College of Business. Attendees heard the 2012
Distinguished Alumnus and Honorary Alumnus
eloquently share their personal stories about
staying connected and giving back to their alma
mater. A special recognition video for the 50th
Golden Alumnus was a highlight of the luncheon.
