CourseDescription
Psychiatricdisordersarecommonlyviewedthroughapurelybiomedicaland/orapsychological
framework.Inthiscourse,wewillapplyasociologicalimaginationtothetopicandinterrogatethewaysin
whichmentalillness,oftenseenasasupremelyprivate“personaltrouble,”isalsoa“publicissue.”Wewill
readtheworksofbothclassicandcontemporaryscholars,butwewillalsousememoirsandfilmsto
sensitizeustotheexperienceofmentalillnessitself.Wewillexplorementalillnessasasocial
construction,stigma,labelingtheory,aswellasissuesofgender,race,class,andsexualityinmentalillness.

 Tolistentothevoicesofthementallyillthemselvesandlearnaboutthementalillnessexperience
