Obesity is a major epidemic in the United States and worldwide and is associated
with several comorbidities including the metabolic syndrome (hypertension,
hyperglycemia etc). My dissertation focuses on researching the link between the
renin-angiotensin system, obesity and insulin resistance as well as related
nutritional interventions.
THESIS RESEARCH:
2009-2012
Conformational Diseases and Therapeutics Laboratory
University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville, TN
Graduate School of Medicine,
Mentor: Dr. V. Berthelier
Thesis Title: Designing Protein Expression and Purification Systems for
Recombinant Z Alpha1-Antitrypsin using the Methylotrophic Yeast,
Pichia pastoris
Polymerization of Z α1-Antitrypsin has been linked with emphysema and
cirrhosis. However in order to conduct the necessary experiments to study this
polymerization, large of amounts of protein are needed. My thesis focused on
developing protein expression and purification systems for recombinant wildtype and mutant α1-Antitrypsin using Pichia pastoris.
