Student Outcome Assessment Plan
Outcome 1: Students will demonstrate knowledge about aging processes and the interpersonal and
family interactions and changes that occur as family members age.
Assessment Plan:
Successful completion of the 3 of 4 Gerontology core courses (400:173G; 31F:150G; 980:125G;
410:125G)
Outcome 2: Students will be able to discover, evaluate, and integrate sources of
knowledge.
Assessment Plan:
Students in the Social Sciences track will satisfactorily complete a research proposal that encompasses a
literature review in Research Methods in Family Science (31F:030) or another Social Science research
methods course.
Students in the LTC track will satisfactorily complete Long Term Care Administration (31G:170g), a
course that requires satisfactorily accessing nursing home code using the internet and accessing policies
in LTC using appropriate resources (e.g., James Allen text). .
Outcome 3: Students will be able to assess the needs, strengths, and challenges of aging individuals
and their families using major theoretical frameworks.
Assessment Plan:
Students will satisfactorily analyze one or more case studies in gerontology classes utilizing theoretical
frameworks and course content (e.g. 31F: 155, 31F:150G, 31F:170G, 400:173G)

Outcome 4: Students in the Long Term Care track will be able to articulate the variety of
responsibilities, legal requirements and challenges faced by a facility administrator and know
strategies, staffing needs, and effective programming options to address the needs of aging
individuals and their families.

Outcome 5: Gerontology majors will be able to demonstrate an understanding of professional codes
of behavior and the ability to critically examine ethical questions and issues as they relate to
professional practice.
