The mission of the
Women’s Studies Program
is to provide feministcentered as well as gender
and identity-aware
education, to support and
expand research in
Women’s Studies and
related fields of
scholarship, to promote
networking, advocacy, and
support for women faculty,
staff, and students and all
interested members of the
University and surrounding
communities, and to serve
as a source of information
on and support for
women’s and genderrelated scholarship,
activities, and issues.
(CREATIVITY & INNOVATION) Texas Tech University is committed to ethical institutional
programs that meet the teaching, research, and service objectives of each discipline and
department, to policies that are consistent with those objectives, and to a working and
learning environment that encourages active participation.
Welcome to the 2010-11 Year at TTU!
This new year opens up new opportunities
for the Women’s Studies Program to become a
part of your academic and social experience here
at Texas Tech.
We invite you to get involved! With both a
colloquium during the fall term and a conference
in the spring, the Program offers the chance for
you to present your research, learn what others
are working on, tell a new story, and listen to new
speakers.
Our Feminist Forum events invite you to get
energized about thinking and making change in
new and much needed ways. Our classes are full
and we are offering scholarships – we hope you
like our new-look newsletters, and you’ll find that
there are many ways to start becoming the
change you want to see!

Feminist Forum
Highlighting Feminist Research
The Women’s Studies Program is pleased to
announce two forums this semester that will
provide a place for discussion, creating a thread
of communication focusing on gender equality.
The first forum, “Methods of Advocacy &
Activism”, will be held on September 27th from
6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in Holden Hall RM 6.
The main theme of this Forum will be to
help generate ideas about how to start or
maintain communication and activism and learn
from others about their experiences of advocacy
within our community.
Individuals can find personal motivation in
their own lived experiences and begin to
mobilize larger groups, but how? This forum
offers us an opportunity to hear feminist voices
that remind us of how one person’s dedication to
a cause or issue can become another person’s
reason to act on behalf of that cause. Come along
and learn about getting or keeping your group up
and running. [continued on page 3]
The Women’s Studies Program will host a
Fall Colloquium on October 29th here on the
Texas Tech campus. The purpose of the
colloquium is to provide the academic
community an opportunity to present papers
and panels analyzing and discussing specific
topics related to feminist research on gender
and gender identity. In the past, topics have
included gender and media, gender and
political activism, cultural construction of
gender, and psychology of sex roles.
We are currently accepting paper and full
panel proposals, in progress or completed. The
deadline for proposals is by email Friday,
October 15th. Look for our announcement in
Tech Announce or review our web site for
submission guidelines. This year the
colloquium will be on Friday, October 29th on
the campus in the Senate Room located in the
Student Union. [continued on page 2]

[continued from front cover] We invite proposals
exploring meanings of movement and change as

presence of women’s, gender, and identity issues,
in both contemporary and historical frameworks.
Undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and
staff from all disciplines are invited to participate
and to attend.
Interdisciplinary proposals, as well as those
from the disciplines and specialty subject areas,
are welcome. We consider proposals from
professional schools and administrative offices,

including mathematics, the agricultural and
natural sciences, and technology and applied
sciences. We also invite students, faculty and
staff members in the social and behavioral
sciences, the visual and performing arts, the
communications fields, and the humanities to
present their research.
The Colloquium Committee also issues a
special invitation to interested parties from other
colleges and universities, including Lubbock-area
institutions, Angelo State University, and other
institutions in the Southwest to present, to
participate, and/or attend this colloquium.
Faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate
students are all invited to share their work, in the
