The Women’s Studies Program Spring 2015 Established 1981 Grounded in History. Moving Forward Welcome Back! Spring, 2015 Announcements + Global Health Security Issues with Dr. Annie Sobel + Save the Date: Annual Conference 2 Spring 2015: News & Announcements The Truth is the only safe ground to stand on. -‐ Elizabeth Cady Stanton This year marks the 200th birthday of one of the founding mothers of the U.S. women’s movement, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who was born in New York in 1815. It is sometimes easy to forget the sacrifices such women made that benefitted future generations. Without the work of these women, who is to say if we would be enjoying the benefits of education, political participation and economic security that we take for granted today. It is important to remember how far we have come but equally important to commit to doing the work before us so that we can assure gender equality for future generations. Keeping this in mind, we dedicate this coming year to the memory of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and the light of women’s equality that she helped to spark so long ago. Wising you a wonderful 2015. Hope you can find to join us for our many events this year. In light of this historical marker, Alamo Drafthouse and Texas Tech University invite you to this film series, which seeks to consider the ways in which sexism is embedded, endorsed, and/or challenged in the cinema. How far have we come? How far do we need to go? Looking back at the past five decades, we have selected films that feature women as central protagonists in order to review changing attitudes toward sex/gender. Together, these films offer an intriguing site for the analysis of diverse representations of race/ethnicity, femininities, and sexualities. All movies will begin at 7:00pm with a brief introduction. The films will be followed by 20-‐30 minutes in the theater for a focused discussion led by a TTU faculty member or expert guest speaker. We encourage all members of the TTU community to attend but ask that no extra credit/community service be offered. The intent of this series is to attract people who are interested in these issues. Sponsored by Alamo Drafthouse, International Film Series, and TTU Women’s Studies. In 1998, an Italian Supreme Court decision overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore jeans, reasoning she m ust have helped her attacker remove them. Enraged by the verdict, within a matter of hours the women in the Italian Parliament launched into immediate action and protested by wearing jeans to work. This call to action motivated and emboldened the California Senate and Assembly to do the same, which in turn spread to Patricia Giggans, Executive Director of Peace Over Violence, and Denim Day in LA was born. The first Denim Day in LA was in April 1999, and has continued every year since. Wearing jeans on this day has become an international symbol of protest against erroneous assumptions about rape. Topics Discussed at the Forum April 29 | 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Location: TBA Part 1: Overview of Denim Day, Italian court case, Denim Day movement Part 2: Rape Culture, Rape Myths, Current Media Cases and Social Media Impact Part 3: Learned Masculinity and Femininity Behavior Giving Rise to Rape Culture Part 4: Bystander Responsibility How are bystanders implicated?, How do we empower bystanders to make change? Each day, people witness a continuum of behaviors that range from being respectful and safe, to sexually abusive and violence. By working together we can highlight sexual violence as a major issue in our communities and reinforce the need for prevention efforts. Gender Fair – April 29 & May 1 Gender Fair is an educational, awareness-‐oriented resource fair exploring gender, equity, and communication. The fair is organized and planned by students (with guidance from Dr. Amy Heuman, Associate Professor, Communication Studies & Women's Studies Affiliated Faculty) taking COMS 3334/WS 3312 Gender & Communication course. This course (cross-‐listed with Women's Studies) examines gender in contemporary society, giving attention to gender roles, masculine and feminine communication styles, social institutions that shape gender, and everyday applications of gender in the lives of people. The first Gender Fair was held in 2012 in the Croslin Room at the TTU Library. 8 Educational booths cover topics, such as; the broader umbrella of biological sex/ societal gender/gender identity/sexuality, gender marking in our communication, body image pressures for men and women, sexual activity education, gender equity in organizations, representation in politics, and violence against women. http://www.depts.ttu.edu/wstudies The Women’s Studies Program Spring 2015 Why Study Women and Gender? Many women studies students report that their courses have had a profound impact on their lives by providing them with a means of understanding their experiences as men and women. Women’s studies not only focus on experiences such as domestic violence, discrimination in the workplace, and gender differences in the division of labor at home, but also give a foundation for understanding the root cause of these experiences, which is the first step to gain the awareness needed to have a more empowered life.
