Probation/Suspension Policy
Ralph Ferguson provided a hand-out (attached) to the Council reflecting statistical information
on Probation, Continued Probation, and First Suspension and how it affects enrollment numbers.
The hand-out also showed the committees proposal for revision of the operating policy
concerning the probation/suspension policy for graduate students.
The committee has proposed that if a students cumulative GPA falls below a 3.0 in one semester,
that student is on probation. If a students cumulative GPA again falls below a 3.0 in the next
semester, that student is then suspended. The committee will modify the proposed policy and
distribute to the Council member’s for their approval. Once the policy is approved it will go in
to affect the following semester.

Liz Hall reported that the search for the new Graduate Dean is underway. Applications were due
on April 1st. A screening committee is scheduled to meet with Dr. Marcy on or around April
15th. There are 11 or 12 candidates to be considered at this time.
John Borrelli reported on the Responsible Conduct of Research seminar. The seminar went over
very well and additional books from the seminar were offered to the Council and any other
faculty in their departments that might like one. Dr. Borrelli has suggested starting a formal
training for Responsible Conduct of Research. The Office of Research Services would oversee
the program. Dr. Borrelli also announced that the seminar was videotaped and a powerpoint
presentation is available if anyone would like to present the material to their departments.
Zeb Alexander will no longer represent the Student Government Association on the Graduate
Council. Scott Gorene will be his new replacement..

Academic Probation and Suspension of Graduate Students
„
If a student’s graduate GPA for a particular semester falls below
3.0, the student will be placed on academic probation. In order
to remove probationary status, the student must make a 3.0
GPA or better in the next semester in which he or she is
enrolled. Failure to do so or to maintain a 3.0 current GPA in
each succeeding semester will result in academic suspension
from further enrollment as a graduate student or in graduate
courses at Texas Tech University. Regulations governing
scholastic probation are based on semester grade point
averages and will be applied regardless of overall grade point
average. Any student who has been suspended must appeal to
the Graduate School, according to OP 64.07, if reinstatement is
desired.

Financial Aid Process
Suspended Students
A strike will be given to the student if they fail to comply with the guidelines
(guidelines displayed in the chart below) Satisfactory progress is based on student
cumulative academic history, beginning with their entry into a degree program.
Once a student receives three strikes, they will be denied financial aid.
Students will have the opportunity to appeal the decision at this time.

Student Affairs Committee Recommendation
„
„
If a student’s graduate GPA for a particular semester falls below 3.0,
the student will be placed on academic probation. In order to remove
probationary status, the student must maintain a 3.0 GPA or better for
two consecutive semesters. This gives the student a fresh start.
Failure to do so or to maintain a 3.0 current GPA will result in academic
suspension from further enrollment as a graduate student or in
graduate courses at Texas Tech University. After the fresh start if GPA
drops below 3.0 the student would be placed on probation for a second
time rather than suspend. Regulations governing scholastic probation
are based on semester grade point averages and will be applied
regardless of overall grade point average. Any student who has been
suspended must appeal to the Graduate School, according to OP 64.07,
if reinstatement is desired.
Summer sessions and or trimester count as one semester.
