Generally speaking, I am available for consultation whenever I am in my office. If you
are unable to meet with me during that time, we can set up an appointment to meet at a
time that better suits your schedule. Finally, please feel free to drop by without an
appointment outside of the regular office hours. Unless I am busy with another timesensitive project, I will be happy to work with you then as well.
Text:
Differential Equations and Linear Algebra
by C. Henry Edwards and David E. Penney
Third Edition, ISBN 978-0-13-605425-2
We will cover the material from chapters 1-7, and chapter 10 in the text. Older editions
of the text MAY suffice for our purposes, but the homework problems and lecture
material will be taken from this edition of the text. If you decide to use an older edition, I
will expect you to be responsible for addressing any discrepancies between the two
editions that might arise.
Prerequisite:
Grades of “C” or better in MATH 2210 or MATH 1260 or MATH
1280 or (MATH 1220 and (PHYS 2210 or PHYS 3210)).
Tutoring:
The Rushing Math Center offers FREE drop in tutoring, a
computer lab, and study areas for undergraduates. The Rushing
Student Center is located between the two mathematics buildings,
LCB and JWB.
Add/Drop Date:
The last day to add or drop this class is Wednesday, June 16, 2010.
ADA Statement:
The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that reasonable
accommodations be provided for students with physical, cognitive,
systemic learning, and psychiatric disabilities. Students need to
contact the instructor at the beginning of the semester to discuss
any such accommodations that they may require for this course.

Homework: 35%
Homework will be assigned daily. These assignments will be collected
each Monday before the start of class. Late homework will not be
accepted. It is in your best interest to complete all of the assigned
problems on the day on which they are assigned. Failure to do so will
cause you to fall behind, a situation from which it will be difficult to
recover.
Projects:
15%
There will be two required computer projects. These are meant to be relatively straight forward exercises, and can be done using the scientific computing program of your choice (Maple, Mathmatica, MATLAB, etc).
Midterm:
20%
One midterm exam will be given during the semester on Thursday, July
15, 2010. Absences from this exam will be excused only if you can
produce verifiable and convincing evidence that you have a significant
illness or serious family crisis that will prevent you from attending.
Except under extremely unusual circumstances, you must make
arrangements with me well before the missed test, and you will be
expected to take the exam prior to your absence.
Final Exam: 30%
The final exam will be administered on Friday, August 6, 2010 from
10:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. Make-ups for the final exam will be allowed in
only the most extreme of circumstances. As with the midterm exam, you
will be expected to take the exam before the regularly scheduled date.
Please make any necessary arrangements with me well in advance. This
will allow me to prepare the necessary alternative versions of the test.
