REQUIRED EXAMINATIONS
Music History and Literature and Music Theory Preliminary Examinations
Taken at the time of initial enrollment. Depending on results, MUHL 5300, MUTH 5300 and/or
MUTH 5301 may be required as leveling courses and do not apply toward the Music History or Music Theory requirements for the Master of Music, Doctor of Musical Arts, or PhD in Fine Arts degrees.
Qualifying Examinations
Taken prior to enrollment in MUSI 8304. Separate examinations in Music Theory, Music History,and the major area of concentration.
Doctoral Research Paper Defense -­‐ Final Examination
Final public oral examination taken after completion of all other degree requirements.

DOCTORAL PERFORMANCE PROJECTS INFORMATION
MUSI 8301 Composition and Portfolio Review
The student and instructor review the student's catalog of existing mature works, in consultation with
other members of the composition, performance, and theory faculty. Attention will be given to the breadth of genres and media represented, mastery of orchestration and notational practice, issues of performance practicality, and the presence of both a personal aesthetic and distinctive compositional
voice. The required final written documents will include:
a) A 1000-­‐15000 word formal statement of career goals, including a plan for artistic and professional development and a strategy for achieving the stated goals and accomplishing
the desired levels of development.
b) Musical score(s) determined by the instructor to be necessary for portfolio development.
MUSI 8302 Chamber Music Composition
The primary purpose of the course is to develop the musical language(s) leading to the major composition within the scope of a manageable chamber work. The student should present the work
along with works from MUSI 8301 in recital. The student will manage the recruitment of performers,
organization of the event(s), publicity, and program and program notes production. Performances
may be on a series of School of Music sanctioned recitals or on an individual recital.
The required final documents will include:
a) The completes score(s).
b) The completed program(s).
c) The development of the program notes into a short essay on the student's musical style,
compositional techniques, and the development of those areas in the student's career up to this point. The purpose
is to develop a writing technique in describing one's music that will lead to the larger document required in MUSI 8304.
MUSI 8303 Major Composition
In consultation with the Major Professor, the student will compose a large scale original work. Usually, the work will be for orchestra or wind ensemble, however, a major chamber work may be
substituted if the student demonstrates a knowledge and experience in a large ensemble composition.
There are no required final written documents.
MUSI 8304 Major Composition with Documentation and Dissemination
The course comprises the culmination of the previous three 8000-­‐level courses and included the completion of the major work and the corresponding documentation. The required final written document will include:
a) The musical score to the major work completed as part of MUSI 8303/8304 in
appropriate notation using software or ink.
b) A substantial paper (the Doctoral Research Paper -­‐ see Texas Tech University Graduate
Handbook 2012-­‐13) discussing the compositional and aesthetic elements of the work.
