Demography of the Seven Billion

Abstract:
Where is the world population heading - what happens when we get there?
The world’s population is expected to peak at between 9 and 10 billion and then slowly decline.
This talk will focus on multiple aspects of the world’s march toward population stability: how
do we know it will happen, what is its timing, what are the regional implications, how much
older will the world’s population get, and what are the implications of this stability for world
environmental change.
Bio-Sketch:
Warren Sanderson holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University. He is a professor of economics and a
professor of history at Stony Brook University in the US state of New York. He is also an institute scholar in the World
Population Program at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg, Austria and a member
of the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital in Vienna, Austria. His research interests lie
in the interactions between population and economics. He has published in a variety of journals, including Nature,
Science, Population and Development Review, Demography, Population Studies, and Demographic Research. His
recent research includes probabilistic population forecasting, innovative approaches to the study of population
aging, as well as the effects of education and other demographic changes on economic growth.
7 Billion and You is a series of free public lectures and discussions by
leading thinkers on the patterns, processes and prognosis for a planet
housing 7 billion humans and counting. It is hosted by the Human
Evolutionary Studies Program in cooperation with Continuing Studies
in Science and Environment at Simon Fraser University. For details on
