Office Hours: TBA
Text: Serge Lang, Linear Algebra, 3rd Edition, Springer, 1987
Grading: Grades will be based on homework and three midterms.
Homework: Assigned on Mondays, collected the following Monday.
You are encouraged to discuss the problem sets among yourselves and
with me at office hours, but the final write-up must be your own work.
Each problem set is worth 10 points, and only the top 10 scores count.
There will be approximately 12 problem sets in all.
Midterms: Three take-home midterms, given out on Wednesdays.
1st Midterm: Due Monday, February 3 (50 points).
2nd Midterm: Due Monday, March 24 (50 points).
3rd Midterm: Due Monday, April 28 (50 points).
Total: 10 Problem Sets + 3 Midterms = 250 points
Prerequisites: Calculus through Math 2210 and instructor approval.
ADA Statement: The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that
reasonable accomodations be provided for every student with physical, sensory, cognitive, systemic, learning, and psychiatric disabilities.
Contact me at the beginning of the semester to discuss whether any
such accommodations are necessary.
Course Description: This is a proof-based course in Linear Algebra.
I am planning to get through the first eight chapters of the textbook,
including vector spaces, matrices and linear mappings, scalar (dot)
products, determinants, eigenvectors and eigenvalues, and unitary operators. The emphasis will be on both computations and a “deep”
understanding of the theory, with the idea of preparing you for quantum mechanics and higher mathematics courses.
