healthy and they are conscious of the nutritional benefits of food
and believe that good food can enhance the body and mind.
Scepticism regarding the healthiness of ‘low fat’ or ‘reduced fat’

proportions favouring more low fat products and always looking
for low fat options when buying food.
Just over one in four Swedish consumers claim to have a mainly
vegetarian diet.
Seven in ten aspire to buy Fair Trade products whenever they

Q.27 How often would you buy local produce, i.e. products produced in your local area?
PERIscope
Environmental Issues - Summary
There has been a slight increase in the proportion preferring to buy
from companies aware of the impact of environmental issues.
Awareness of food miles and carbon footprint remains well below
knowledge of sustainability.
Three quarters of Swedish consumers are aware of sustainability
and two in five claim it has an impact of their shopping.
Understanding of the term ‘local food’ as ‘made in close proximity
to where I live’ is higher than in 2008, but far fewer interpret the
term as meaning made in their local county or province.
Three in every four report at least weekly purchasing frequency of
local food.

Grocery Shopping - Summary
While price remains the most important thing for over one third
when grocery shopping, there is less of a tendency to look at price
first and to compare prices between outlets.
The proportion agreeing that quality of fresh food is more
important than price has increased since 2008 and a higher
proportion are willing to pay a bit more for superior customer
service.
The proportions reporting that they always check for quality
symbols and country of origin have declined somewhat since 2008.
The addition of ‘fresh’ on a label is more important to Swedish
consumers than is ‘natural’.
