PERIscope Health & Wellbeing – Summary Over seven in ten French consumers consider their diet to be very or fairly healthy and French adults believe strongly that it is important to eat properly to be healthy. Scepticism regarding the healthiness of ‘low fat’ or ‘reduced fat’ products has increased with fewer accepting this as a given. Concern about the availability of product options for those with food intolerances has diminished since 2008, perhaps a factor of increased availability. Fewer than one in five French consumers claim to have a mainly vegetarian diet, below the average for other European countries. 53. PERIscope Environmental Issues – Summary Awareness of food miles and carbon footprint, though growing, remains well below knowledge of sustainability. Virtually all French consumers are aware of sustainability and approaching half claim it has an impact on their shopping, up on 2008, and comparing very favourably with the European average. There has been a slight increase in the proportion preferring to buy from companies aware of the impact of environmental issues. One French consumer in five claims to buy local food at least several times a week with half reporting at least weekly frequency. 63. PERIscope Grocery Shopping - Summary There is a strong tendency to most often shop in the same store, with the proviso of looking for the best value for money to be had. While price remains the most important thing for half when grocery shopping, there is less of a tendency to compare prices between outlets. The proportion agreeing that quality of fresh food is more important than price has remained generally stable. , the proportion reporting that they never check quality symbols (and to a lesser extent country of origin) has grown since 2008, perhaps reflecting a more value conscious approach to shopping. Some new statements measured in 2010 indicated that the description ‘grown without pesticides’ pulls much more weight than descriptions regarding calcium levels and lower fat content. 74.
