Fifteen DBA students were
admitted to the program in Fall
2004/05 (5 each in Finance,
Marketing, and Operations
Management). Students
completed coursework
requirements in their disciplines.
Coursework was extensive and
required in- depth study of
research articles. In addition to
the coursework, all students
successfully completed a
research project.
100% passed the course work
and completed the project.
All demonstrated the knowledge
of the theoretical concepts and
an understanding of research
techniques and tools. On such
key criteria as class
participation, critical review of
the articles, presentations of the
project, and examinations, the
performance was satisfactory.
Progress on the research
projects was rated very
satisfactory.
The instructor carefully reviewed the
performance of each student in such areas as the
knowledge of the subject matter, understanding o
research techniques, and integration of the
literature review.
He/she also
discussed the areas of improvements with
students.
Based on the instructor's
input, the DBA director also provided comments
on studying and presenting critical concepts of
the articles.
The DBA committee and the instructor recommended that
students take related courses outside the College. Courses
such as advanced econometrics and economics were
recommended to expand the knowledge of the field.
Recommendation was made to include the current
developments in the field. Recommendations were also
made to publish research projects in a refereed journal.
Based on this, four students out of six have submitted their
works for publication.
Students found the courses outside the
College useful for their discipline. Continue
to recommend students to take relevant
courses outside the College. Students have
published their work in refereed journals.
In Fall 2005 one student took
comprehensive examination in
the major area. In the Spring
2006, 10 strudents took the
examination.
The Fall 05 student
successfully passed the exam,
scoring above average on the
rubric. The scale used was very
dissatisfactory to very
satisfactory. Of the 10
students in spring 06, four
passed the exam first time, and
the remaining passed only
some sections. These students
are scheduled to retake their
exams in Summer 2006.
Two graders reviewed the answers and used a
rubric to assess quality of the answers. The rubric
consisted of key measurable outcomes such as
organization of the answers, integration of the
relevant literature, completeness and articulation
of answers, and depth of understanding of
subject matter. Summated scores were
calculated to determine pass or fail.
Examination committee members provided special tutoring
and advice to students who had failed. Areas of
improvement were recommended. The tutorials helped
students to improve their performance in exams.
Emphasis was also placed on learning new
statistical tools to test theories and
hypotheses. More guidance was given by
the DBA committee and the DBA director to
help students to better prepare for the
comprehensive examination.

successfully defended their
dissertations. .
All three students passed the
dissertation defense and
received very satisfactory
scores on each item of the
rubric.
Review
The committee members were pleased with the
performance. In fact, faculty members and
students who attended the dissertation defense
noticed significant improvements in the quality of
the dissertations compared to earlier
dissertations.
Actions
Students in pre-dissertation stages are encouraged to
attend the dissertation defense sessions in order to learn
more about the process. A special workshop was
introduced in 2005 titled, "The Dissertation Journey," and
taught by a visiting scholar to help students through the
process of planning and executing the dissertation.
Improvements
Maintain quality in the program and produce
high quality dissertations that lead to publicat
ions in refereed journals.
