Goals of Internship
• The purpose of internship is to provide students with an opportunity to gain additional
skills that will allow them to move on to the next level of career development.
• New skills can be added to the students resume
Finding an Internship Site
•
Students are primarily responsible for selecting and obtaining the internship site. This is
to provide students the opportunity and flexibility to find a site most suited for their
unique needs (e.g., geographic location, work requirements, family responsibilities, etc.).
Suggestions for what to look for in an Internship site: students should attempt to match 3
skills that they would like to acquire with a site that can provide the necessary learning
experience.
For students having difficulty finding a site: Attend the Alumni Internship event hosted
in November and April. Please talk to your professors to find out the exact date.
Students can also speak with an advisor for help in determining their goals and
suggestions about appropriate sites.

Hourly Requirements
•
•
Time: 150 hours over the course of a semester or approximately 10 hrs per week
Project hours count towards the total hour requirement. In other words, the internship
does not need to occur entirely on site, especially if you are working on a program
planning project.
Other Class requirements
• This is a four credit hour class. In addition to the internship itself, students are required to
do the following
 Attend six class meetings – see scheduled meetings below
 Prepare a book review
 A journal of their internship experience
ALD 688 Guidelines – Revised November 2012 Page 1
 Presentation to the class about their internship experience
 Other assignments as outlined in the syllabus
Scheduled Meetings
•
The internship class will meet six times during the semester including the first
Wednesday of the semester and the last Wednesday of the semester. The instructor will
inform students of the four other Wednesday class meetings at the first class.
Students are required to meet individually twice with their instructor:
• First meeting: at the beginning of the semester
• Second meeting: Conducted on-site, with the instructor, student and site supervisor
approximately 10 weeks into the semester.
