SPEECH AND HEARING MAJOR AND MINOR TRANSITION GUIDELINES
GENERAL TRANSITION RULES FOR
SPEECH AND HEARING MAJOR AND MINOR
1. SPH majors/minors may stay on their current advising plan or
transition to the NEW plan. The current advising plan is called the
OLD catalog. The new advising plan is called the NEW catalog.
2. The SPH major/minor will accept the 3 or 4 credit version of SPH
431 and the 2 or 3 credit version of SPH 438 for students under
the OLD or NEW catalog.
3. Students who declare SPH as a major/minor prior to Fall 2014 may
opt to follow the OLD or NEW catalog requirements.
4. OLD Catalog: Students who have already taken SPH 431 for 4
credits will have a 1 credit overage if they take the new 3 credit SPH
438. Students in this situation will be permitted to take a special
topics version of SPH 438 for 2 credits in order to avoid this credit
overage. However, students in this situation will not receive general
education credit for the special topics course. Students will need to
take a different course to meet the Social Diversity/African
American general education requirement. Students may decide to
take the new SPH 438 course for 3 credits to avoid the extra
course.
5. Under the OLD and NEW major programs, credit shortages in the
major of 1 credit will be waived.
6. Under the NEW minor program, credit shortages of 1 credit will be
waived. (OLD catalog is not affected.)
7. Students must complete all general education requirements.
8. Students must satisfy the residency requirement of the university
(complete 30 hours at CSU, of which at least 24 must be completed

484 course will be short 1 credit in order to complete the required 8

credits for the honors program. They should take SPH 495 over the
course of 2 semesters for 5 credits to make up the credit shortage.
New Catalog: Students who choose the new catalog who have taken the 5
credit HSC 484 course will experience a 2 credit overage. They may
reduce the credits in the SPH 495 course series by 2 credits accordingly.
They must complete a minimum of 8 credits in the SPH program.
CLINICAL TRACK:
TRACK
Old Catalog: No transition plan is needed.
New Catalog:
1. If students have already taken CSC 321 and choose the new
program, they will be 1 credit over.
2. Students who have already completed 1 semester of SPH 495 will
need to adjust the credits taken during the second semester of SPH
495 so that they complete a minimum of 8 credits in the SPH
program.
CULTURAL COMPETENCY TRACK:
TRACK
Old Catalog: No transition plan is needed given the variability of credits
allowed in SPH 495.
New Catalog: Students may have a 1 credit overage if they have already
taken a 4 credit course offered in the old version of the Culture,
Communication, and Health Certificate. Students who have already taken
1 semester of SPH 495 for 2 credits may be granted a waiver of the
second semester of SPH 495 if the honors adviser believes the student
has completed the requirements of the SPH honors program. Students
must complete a minimum of 8 credits in the SPH program.
