The Gerontology Research Centre
The Gerontology Research Centre was
established in 1982 both to stimulate and
to undertake research on topics relating
to aging and the aged. The research focus
of the Centre is on applied gerontology
with concentration on prevention of
victimization and exploitation of the
elderly; population aging and changing
lifestyles; health and aging; aging and the
built environment and older adult
education. The Centre publishes two
newsletters, books, and reports and
organizes conferences and workshops. The
Centre also provides information and
consulting services.

The John K. Friesen
Conference Series
This conference is the fifteenth offering in
the John K. Friesen Conference Series in
Gerontology. The series is designed to meet
the continuing education needs of agencies
and individuals responsible for planning,
administering and providing services to the
elderly. The series embraces two of John
Friesen's lifetime interests – the education
of adults and the special needs of an aging
population.
John Friesen is one of Canada's leading
contributors to the field of adult education.
In his more than forty year career, Dr.
Friesen served in university extension work
in Canada and overseas and was involved in
enhancing life in many different ways from
community arts to credit unions. For his
leadership role in adult education, Simon
Fraser University awarded him an
Honourary Doctor of Laws Degree in 1985.

15TH JOHN K. FRIESEN
CONFERENCE
June 6th & 7th, 2005
SEGAL CENTRE, SFU VANCOUVER CAMPUS
515 W. HASTINGS STREET, VANCOUVER
R
RESPONSIVENESS to the needs
and wishes of people nearing the end
of their lives is often considered a
marker of a society’s health and its
progressiveness. However, Canadians
have greatly differing perspectives about
what an “appropriate response” is and
how far we should go to “respect
people’s choices” about the timing
and circumstances of their death. Law,
medicine, ethics, religion, culture,
and personal values make this a very
complex area.
This year’s John K. Friesen conference,
“Quality of Life at the End of Life”
offers a thought provoking examination
of issues affecting the lives of people
who are dying and their loved ones, the
options currently available to people
in these circumstances, and the consequences of the decisions and choices
they make, and others make for them.
The conference sponsored by Simon
Fraser University’s Gerontology
Research Centre highlights policies,
programs and services currently available to citizens of British Columbia
and Canada from the perspective of
our ability to respect choices, while
respecting life. Presenters will identify
actions that can be taken to ensure
quality of life for all who are at the
end of life.
