visiting student: wish to attend SFU as a visitor, taking credit earned at SFU back to a “home”
institution. As a non-degree student you are not formally admitted to an SFU program, and will
have low class enrollment priority: as well, space in upper level classes in often limited. Admission is
competitive and all normal admission requirements apply. An exception is made for those visitors who
attend on a formal exchange program with SFU.

Each term, we receive many more applications that we can accept. Academic performance is the
main criterion for admission and is used exclusively in 90% of cases. However, we recognize that
some candidates have other attributes and achievements which should be recognized in determining
admission. Therefore, we seek to admit not only applicants who are academically very well-qualified but
also those who meet minimum admission standards and have:
• demonstrated commitment and/or excellence in other endeavours, or
• presented a clear and valid reason for attending the University, or
• succeeded in their studies in spite of difficult circumstances.

Literacy skills
I meet (or I plan to meet) the SFU Literacy Skills Requirement in one of the following ways:
High school: obtain a grade of 75% of higher in an eligible English 12/English Literature 12 course,
or an English 12 First Peoples course, OR obtain a grade of 60 to 74% in an eligible English 12/
English Literature 12 course, and satisfy additional literacy requirements within my first three tersm
enrolled at SFU.
Postsecondary: meet the high school requirements, OR obtain a grade of C- or better in an English
course (three credits or more) that transfers to SFU, OR obtain a grade of C- or better in a certified
W (writing intensive) course that transfers to SFU, OR graduate from a bachelor’s or higher degree
program at a recognized university with a C- or better grade in a course that transfers to SFU as an
English (ENGL) or W transfer credit.
Primary language is not English: SFU’s preference is that you obtain a minimum score of 6.5 on the
Academic Modules of the IELTS (English Language Testing System). Alternatively, you may achieve
the following on TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): TOEFL iBT (internet based test)
with an overall score of 88 or better with a minimum score of 20 in each of the four components
(listening, speaking, writing, reading), OR TOEFL CBT (computer based test) with a minimum
score of 230 including a minimum essay score of 4.5, OR TOEFL CBT with a minimum score of
250, OR successful completion of SFU’s English Bridge program.

QUANTITATIVE skills

three terms at SFU and achieve at least a C grade.

Admission Deposit for New Students
New students must pay a non-refundable admission deposit to confirm acceptance of the offer of
admission to undergraduate studies given by the University.
The deposit will be applied to the cost of tuition. The deposit is not an additional charge to the tuition
fee assessment. The amount is $250 for Domestic Students. ($750 for International Students.)
