1. A farmer wants to build a rectangular pen for his sheep. He wants to use 400 feet of
fence.
• Draw a rectangle and label its length and width.
• Express the area of the pen as a function of its width.
• What do the dimensions of the pen have to be if the farmer want the area of the
pen to be 199 square feet?
• Is this a realistically sized pen?
2. This time a farmer wants to use 200 feet of fence to enclose a rectangular plot that is
against a wall. (This means you do not have to worry about one of the sides.) Here is a
drawing:
• Express the area of the the plot in terms of the width.
• What do the dimensions of the plot have to be if the farmer wants the area of the
plot to be 5000 square feet?
