Friday Homework 3: Due Friday 6/20/14 I think what we will do with friday homework is wait to go over it until the next friday. So technically it will not be due until then but I would recommend and encourage you to do it by Monday anyway. 1. Draw a sketch of the following functions: • y = sin(x) • y = 2x2 + 3 • y = 2x − 1 • y= 1 x 2. (Write up)We can talk about the slope of a line, but does it make sense to talk about the slope of a general curve? (For example think of y = sin(x).) How would the slope of a curve differ from the slope of a line? For those that have had calculus, what concept in calculus is another word for the instantaneous slope or rate of change of a function? 3. For each of the following scenarios answer these questions (answers may vary): • If you were to graph the given relationship which variable would be on the X-axis and which one would be on the Y-axis? Why? • Write a description of what the Y-intercept would represent. Write a description of what an X-intercept would represent. • Draw a graph of what you think the relationship would look like. Are there any asymptotes? Scenario 1: I decided to enter a hotdog eating contest that starts at 4pm. Time since 4pm (in minutes) and the number of hotdogs I have eaten are both changing together. Scenario 2: A lizard (which is cold-blooded) jumps into a cold lake that is 10◦ F. The time spent in the lake (in minutes) and the lizards body temperature (in degrees fahreneit) both change together. Scenario 3: A bird watcher notices that the number of seeds she puts in her bird feeder per day and the number of birds that visit the feeder per day both change together. 1
